In my earlier Birthday greeting I though you
were my 8th grade teacher. Actually, I think you were the 6th grade
teacher at the Mohawk School at that time (1951-1952). In any case, Happy
100th Birthday.

What a grand birthday to celebrate! We visited
your city in 1990 during the FinnFest that was held in Hancock. Someday
we will come back for another visit. Hope you are enjoying all those
pasties. They are also part of our diet in this area too. Unfortunately,
we can not buy them in shops like you do in Michigan but we do make them
ourselves.
Hope you have a great day. Jean and Dick Lindblad Newfield, New York |
Happy birthday and many happy returns for a
wonderful, wonderful day! Just had to write to say that on your birthday
we here in Arlington are having a party, complete with pasties, to celebrate
St. Barbara, patron saint of miners, firemen, and those who work with explosives.
I'm a transplanted Yooper who grew up with pasties provided alternately by the women's circles of the Catholic church and the Methodist church in Newberry. Couldn't let my "city slicker" kids grow up without pasties so I learned to make them. Fortunately, I married a mining engineer so he was more than agreeable to that and hence, also, the St. Barbara's Day party. Again, many happy returns of your special day. Pat Kaas

Happy Birthday to You! Happy Birthday to You!
Happy Birthday, dear Kathryn. Happy Birthday to You! How wonderful
to be blessed with 100 good years.
We've enjoyed the pasties we've ordered over the internet, and understand that you've had a hand in them. We are e-mailing you from Grass Valley, California, were we moved in 1994. Before that we were born and raised in Michigan, living our married years in the metropolitain Detroit area, in a town on the west side of Wayne county, Garden City. The husband of this pair spent 7 years of his boyhood (from age 3 - 10) in Hancock, after his Grandpa Grose died, and his mother had to go there (with her three boys) to manage the apartment building willed to her by her father. At the end of that period, she sold that corner property on "Quincy Hill," 3-4 blocks from the E. Wright elementry school. That boy (whose grandmother was from Cornwall, England) loved those years in the UP; and after our marriage, we often spent vacations in the UP with our own children. The wife in this pair was a fan of Manistee, in the LP, as she spent her girlhood summers there with her Grandma and Grandpa (her mother's parents). So both of us, you see, are "died in the wool" Michiganders. Upon our retirement, however, we left Michigan for northern California so as to avoid the cold and snow of Michigan winters for a little while. The town of Grass Valley, CA, were we bought a house, is in the California Gold Country of the Sierra foothills, and was populated with Cornish miners (among others), just as Hancock was. So, we felt at home. They do have pasties in this town, but the husband insists they are not as good as "reat UPer pasties," so we were delighted to be able to order from Still Waters. So, that's our story, which we thought you might like to know about, since we are so "connected" to Hancock, Michigan, and so enjoy the pasties. We hope your birthday party on December 4, Friday, will be a very, very happy one, and each year added to your 100 will be Blessed! Sincerely, Carol and Chuck Quandt |
For you, we have sent animated and musical
e-greetings: a cake with 100 candles, fireworks, balloons, tunes,
and many wishes! Enjoy your special day!
We certainly enjoy the pasty.com. Thanks! The Arvo Lohela Family |
Hello Kathryn!
Word has reached me way down here in Houston, Texas that Friday will be a big day for you. Lots of big doings going on, right? Well, I just wanted to take a minute to wish you the very, very best! I have ordered pasties from Pasty Central several times and they are just like my Mom used to make! Since you are a pasty maker you really know how to make them right! My parents were born and raised in Calumet and Laurium. Maybe you knew them? They both passed away last year but if they were still living they would be 94 and 95 years old. My Dad's name was Aloysius Revitte. There were 11 children in his family and they all went to Sacred Heart School so you may have come across one of them at one time or another. My Mom's maiden name was Crescence Cocking. She went to the public schools but did attend Sacred Heart Church. I won't take up your time, Kathryn, because I know you are busy making pasties and getting ready for your big day. Happy, Happy Birthday! Betty Burg

Happy Birthday, Kathryn!
I found the Pasty Central web site from George Hite's Eagle Harbor web site. What a delight for those of us who can't be up there year 'round! And what a great past(y)time for you and your companions! I had some of your wares shipped to my brother in Raleigh, North Carolina. If he gives them a good review I may have to try some myself. Hope you have a magnificent celebration! Eric Stewart

Happy 100th Birthday to you Ms. Sullivan!
My name is Carol and I just returned from visiting friends in Laurium
for Thanksgiving!
Although I was born and raised in Connecticut, I sure do love the UP! I am one of those folks whose grandfather started out from Germany in the early 1920's and ended up working in the copper mines for a few years before he started east. He worked in the Quincy mine shaft which he used to tell me stories about all the time. Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away In September of 1997, 21 days before his 100th birthday. Back in 1992, I was talking to a neighbor and I asked where she was from. She told me she was from Michigan and I asked where about. She told me it was a small town that not many people had heard about. I then asked what town it was. She replied... Calumet! I said I know where that is! She didn't quite believe me right away and then I asked "Isn't that where the copper mines are?" She then asked how do you know about the mines? And I told her about my grandfather. She was amazed that someone who lived in Connecticut all their lives knew about Calumet and the copper mines. My friend goes home at least 3 times a year to visit her Mom and Aunt who live in Laurium. In 1994, I convinced her that we should drive to Laurium for Thanksgiving and we did! I now been visit Calumet once a year and I LOVE IT! To you Ms. Sullivan I wish a VERY HAPPY and HEALTHY 100th BIRTHDAY! Carol K. |
Dear Kathryn,
We have never met, but we visit Pasty Central nearly every day to see what is going on in our favorite part of the world. What a beautiful picture of you on the Pasty Cam. And how exciting to hear that you will be celebrating your 100th birthday on December 4! We have both taught school also and would love to hear you tell about your adventures in the classroom. I (Lyndelle) grew up in Holland, Michigan. And when I introduced my husband to Copper Country he fell so in love with it that we plan on retiring there. Just this summer we bought a camp on Lake Superior that we will winterize and remodel a bit toward that end. We were so lucky. Our camp is right next door to some good friends of ours that we met on the internet! Kathyrn, have a wonderful birthday. We look forward to hearing all about your celebration on Pasty Central. May God bless you with continued health and energy is our prayer for you. Sincerely, Lyndelle and Peter Chiomenti Frederick, Maryland and now Calumet too! |
Dear Mrs. Sullivan,
I am writing from Ann Arbor to wish you a very Happy Birthday. I'll bet you haven't had many Birthdays with no snow on the ground like this year, so you have special weather for a special Birthday. My husband and I spent eight days touring the Upper Peninsula early in October and it was absolutely beautiful. I took so many pictures but they just don't compare to actually being there and seeing the beauty. I imagine you have see a good many changes in the town, and the area, in your lifetime. I think you are lucky to live in such a lovely part of the state. You have all of my best wishes for a wonderful day and I am looking forward to seeing party pictures on the web site. Sincerely, Michelle Nasers |
Dear Kathy,
You don't know me and I don't know you, but I hear you have been around for an entire century. I hope you have a wonderful and glorious birthday! It would be fascinating to talk with you and hear some of the stories you must know. My husband and I are teachers at Prairie River Middle School in Merrill, Wisconsin, so I feel we have a common bond since you were also a teacher. I am originally from Hubbell and get back to the Copper Country whenever I can. The Pastycam site is a great way to visit the UP when I can't be there in person. Again, I hope you have a wonderful birthday and celebrate to its fullest! Best wishes - Lisa Pugh |

Dear Kathryn,
Though I have never met you I wanted to join others as you celebrate your birthday! 100 is a milestone that not many people achieve! Congratulations! It must be the clean air of the Keewenaw Peninsula that keeps you so healthy. I saw your picture on www.pasty.cam. You look great for 100 years! I hope your day is a special on the fourth. May God continue to richly bless you. Sincerely, Cathy Bittner |
Dear Kathyrn,
Can I be one of the first to wish you a "Happy Birthday?" What a remarkable milestone!!! .....and the pasties are great, too! ..from one of the pasty eaters downstate with old roots in the 'Copper Country'. I went to school in Houghton and my mother was born in Calumet in 1903. She was one of nine children and her name was Ruth Harmer. She passed on in 1982. Many happy returns on this great occasion! from an admirer, Jack Horner. |
