For Shoebox Memories, this is an old snow roller, photographed in Calumet by Isler, 1900. Instead of plowing the snow, they flattened it with the large rollers seen in the back! I count a team of 14 horses and 9 extremely cold looking workers!

I just made my one year anniversary update to Copper Country Reflections, and wanted to thank Pasty Central again for hosting it. I've had so many great emails from people who like it, so I do appreciate the support.

You have done a tremendous job preserving many "shoebox memories" at Copper Country Reflections. Just like Kevin Musser over at the Copper Range Railroad site (which we also host), you guys must spend hundreds of hours researching, editing, and publishing such a wealth of information. I know it takes me awhile just to do a simple daily picture and caption.

We'll celebrate the start of year #5 of the Pasty Cam later this week, and I was doing a little math... If I've averaged about 2 hours preparing, publishing, and uploading each days picture, that's 365 days x 4 years x 2 hours = 2,920 hours, or about 73 work weeks since the Pasty Cam was born on February 28, 1998. Good thing this is just a hobby, or I'd never get anything done!

And I'm sure it's just as much a labor of love for you with Copper Country Reflections. Congratulations on completing your first year, and we hope there are many more to come.

Just happened to visit the Reflections site earlier today by coincidence and would like to add that there are some great new photos(by a Mr. Meier) of Ahmeek #2--formerly near Mohawk--and Calumet during C&H's 50th anniversary in 1916.

I spent all yesterday afternoon browsing the Copper Country Reflections.My Dad's family were lived and worked in the mines in the Allouez,Calumet,Mohawk, Lake Linden areas during the years from the turn of the century until the 1960s. Still have family there although we left in the 1930s for the west. These are wondereful, historical pictures. I'm so glad they have been preserved. Thank you for your effort.

Dan, thank you for that! Now we just need to convince Websters that Pank is a real word! I tried it in scrabble and had to pick it up. Dummies don't know nuttin'.

"Panked" a lot of snow to make 'ice' in Copper City in the 60's as I'm sure the guys in Ahmeek, Fulton, Allouez & Wolverine, etc. also did. Every town had an outdoor rink back then.

Trow dem dummies out da winder, sehooker and Al. Dat's rite, dey don't no nuttin'. Dey don't even no wuts a swamper.

My mother used to tell us kids of the teams of horses and how they would roll the snow flat on US 41. She would then ski to the Franklin school on barrel slats fashioned by her father on this snow flattened road.
Now I've seen what she was talking about. Thanks a bunch.
