Mysterious visit to Mandan    ...scroll down to share comments

By
John Dee on Monday, November 13, 2000 - 10:24 pm:

My adventures took me to Copper Harbor yesterday and on the way home I stopped off to explore Mandan with the dogs. I snapped a few photos. I posted them to the journal last night and woke up to three e mails telling me to look at the one shot that looked to have a ghostly image in the window. Scroll back up and look again..

Brought chills to my spine!

Another weird thing about things was that the dogs only ran up to that house. Burt even tried to push the door open with his nose. All the other homes they were not interested in. When it happened I just thought that they smelled a critter near the house. Kinda spooky now that I think about it.

Too bad I did not get it done about 2 weeks ago, closer to Halloween!

Thanks, John, for another glimpse of life in the U.P. We welcome guest Pasty Cam photos by email, and it was a treat to receive this one today.

Face in the window??

By
R. Olson Indiana on Monday, November 13, 2000 - 11:04 pm:

Hey John,I'm about ready to go to bed. Not funny.
Ha! Ha! Atleast if the dogs wanted to go in,it was a good ghost.

By walt on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 04:21 am:

You mean the window to the right, second floor, top right pane of glass--is that a face looking back just above the wood grille, facing the interior of the room, but turning to look back outside?

By f. sisk, douglas, georgia on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 09:18 am:

spooky,

By Joan W. on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 10:10 am:

As soon as I saw the picture, my eyes were drawn to the face in the upper window!! Haunted houses in the U.P.?? Could that be a child's face...or a woman? It would be interesting to get the history of the families that lived there and find out if anyone happened to die in that room...or if anything else happened!!

By Chris Kelly, Chicago on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 10:26 am:

John,
This was a better photo than any of the sites I visited on Halloween trying to see something like you shot. Why don't you look into the history of the house?

I so desparately want to believe in ghosts, but the rational side of me asks - just for the objective, scientific record, you assumed the house is empty and abandonded, right? Can you go back there to go into the house to see if anyone was inside?

By g. jones, california on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 11:07 am:

The picture brought goose-bumps all over me! Yes, there are haunted houses in the U.P. I used to live in one in Osceola. This image appears to be an elderly woman to me.

By b.sirp, illinois on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 11:20 am:

I'm guessing Santa!

By kkoski-MI on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 11:37 am:

I'm not sure, but I think I'd want to go back & check it out....during the day....with the dogs....

Or it might be Heikka Lunta's hide out, now that he's been discovered, it'll snow!

By alicia marshall on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 11:50 am:

Ohhh, Oogie boogie! It looks like a young blond child in the window.Eerie.

By Liz Benson, Pocatello ID on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 12:35 pm:

Gosh, I attended a lecture at our University last evening (Monday 11/13) given by Ed and Lorraine Warren, "America's foremost experts on paranormal phenomena" (not my words). They were the Amityville Horror ghost busters that told the people to get the heck out and don't go back. And, now I see a ghost on Pasty Cam. I am well grounded in my beliefs of good spirits (ie God) so I figure there is a down side also (ie Evil). Any way, happy ghosting, John!

By Peg Newman Niedholdt, Laurium , MI on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 01:36 pm:

My family owned this camp for many, many, years. The "person in the window" is a plastic curtain. My sister & father were just up there. To our knowledge no one ever died there. It is a pleasant memory for my entire family - big old wood stove in the kitchen and a pot belly stove in the front room. I remember warm memories of big breakfasts, pasties for lunch, and a steady stream of hunting stories from my dad and uncle. We would carve our names and the date on the outside door frames. The camp is now owned by the Keweenaw Historical Society. Sorry folks - no ghosts....just great memories.

By KN, Minnesota on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 03:05 pm:

This building appears to be the same as the one in the PastyCam photo from 09/27/00 (which also happens to be my current wallpaper on my desktop). If you look at the same window, something does seem to be hanging on the inside (and not a reflection of the sky).

By Bill Penprase on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 03:15 pm:

Mandan will be swarming with tourists next summer after this "discovery". My uncle owned one of those houses and spent much time there in the summer. He told me many stories but no mention of ghosts.

By Rose - Channahon, IL on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 06:00 pm:

We have always included a stop at Mandan on our trips to Copper Harbor. I'll have to go over my 30 year collection of pictures I've taken in the Keweenaw and see if this house is in any of them.
Hope it doesn't get too crowded now!

By Craig Music , Michigan on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 06:12 pm:

The first thing I noticed is what looks like a woman in a flowered dress looking out the window to the left of the door ... Is this house supposed
to be empty. If so ...... Yikes!!

By Nancy Nelson, WI on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 06:15 pm:

Great picture--there is something especially haunting about thost houses in Mandan, even if they are not haunted.

By Scot Turnquist Desert Hills AZ on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 08:12 pm:

I think that the "ghost" is looking for a pasty.
Great work - Keep it up.

By mike, mi on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 10:28 pm:

hey i don't see anything in the window to the left of the door, but i don't think that it's a curtain in the upper left hand window, it's more than that.

By Jake, HW, Michigan on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 - 11:52 pm:

I couldn't resist checking out this site after hearing about the "mystery photo" complete with ghosts earlier this evening. I'm glad I did, it's very intriguing.

Thank you Craig for letting me know about this little gem of a UP web site. I'll be back.

By Betty Logan, Michigan on Wednesday, November 15, 2000 - 12:22 am:

Just wanted to add that this same apparition? was also visible in the pasty cam shot of this same house on Sept 27th I have a love affair with old deserted houses and I am always reminded of Joyce Kilmer's "The House With Nobody In It." Surely do enjoy all of the lovely pictures. Keep up the good work. Betty

By Cousin Jack on Wednesday, November 15, 2000 - 01:44 pm:

Not to worry, everyone. That's my great-great Aunt Jennie Nancegollan. Needless to say we've encouraged her to haunt more populated ghost towns like Central or Delaware, but she insists on having quick access to the Mandan Road(still hung up on her century-long fetish for spooking corporate loggers apparently). Should you come upon her on a dark and foggy night while out shining deer, just smile and tell her that Casper sent you.
It's always worked for me!

By C. Boyd, MI on Wednesday, November 15, 2000 - 06:29 pm:

The image I see is in the right upper windows (above the door). It is of a young girl, the eyes are looking out just above the pane divider, the hair is dark brown or black and shoulder length. I believe in ghosts and would like to visit this site on my next trip to the U.P. (I live downstate Michigan)

By Nancy on Wednesday, November 15, 2000 - 07:49 pm:

I thought it was Santa too at first! It also
occured to me that those could be spider webs.
There are spiders that build thick webs on window
panes. Very spooky, though,
and a great photographic moment, thank you for
sharing!

By Greg, Shoreview, MN on Wednesday, November 15, 2000 - 08:41 pm:

Hey this thing (ghost) is really cool, also since
I was there a year when I was 13. Now I'm usually
not a skeptic, but for this I'm a little
skeptical. I went to the other picture of Mandan
on 9-27, and the same image is in the right
window. The picture shows a different angle and
it's clearer, but it still looks like a face.
Unfortunately I believe it is nothing more than a
Halloween mask, but another question is, why this
"ghost" is in the exact same place? Yet ghosts can
take so many forms, so who

By Greg, Shoreview, Mn on Wednesday, November 15, 2000 - 08:43 pm:

The computer cut off the ending of my message. so
it is supposed to say "Who Knows...." sorry about
that

By Maggie, Shoreview, MN on Wednesday, November 15, 2000 - 08:48 pm:

Hi, my brother Greg wrote a message, and I really
don't agree with him... it's a ghost... if you go
to the pic. on 9/27 you can definitely tell that
it only has a head!!!!

By CheddarJohn on Thursday, November 16, 2000 - 11:02 am:

I would start looking in old newspapers or police records or something. Maybe there was a murder or a horible accident in that house!

ARe the homes in Mandan used for haunted houses--or even a haunted village--at Hallowe'en? Maybe it's something Pasty.com can do next year. Who owns the houses and land? It'll probably be a retirement village in 5-10 years.

By Lisa on Friday, November 17, 2000 - 11:56 pm:

What's visible in the window on the top left that looks like a "ghost" is probably a reflection of something, but in the window on the right, it does look like a woman in a flowered dress. Creepy!!

By Leslie on Saturday, November 18, 2000 - 12:25 pm:

I must really be losing it! -- I see two people a man in the left upstairs window with overalls on and a large round face and in the right upstairs window a female with a skinny neck and her hair pulled back clearly they are both looking down at the photographer. Happy Thanksgiving!

By Rich Karl on Saturday, November 18, 2000 - 06:29 pm:

Hi there: I have been outside the house in 1987 and noticed the same thing with a friend from the Calumet AFS...he wanted to get into the house also but I used the 'breaking and entering' argument to deter him....the odd air of unreality and detachment at this location is quite unsettling....interesting to see it here....weird!

By Rose on Sunday, November 19, 2000 - 07:11 pm:

Please, could someone with a key go into that house and take down that "plastic curtain" if there is one? I am so hoping it's a ghost! I just may have to come up there next summer and check it out for myself! (I'll use any excuse to go to the U.P.) I have been to a lighthouse in Florida (St. Augustine) that is supposed to have a ghost in the basement, but didn't see anything there.

By Tom Cat on Wednesday, November 22, 2000 - 03:12 pm:

If you look at 9-27-00 picture the curtains are closed on the left window. John Dee's picture the curtains are open on the left window Very interesting.

If you want to see a ghost. Go and see the Paulding Light. It's on hwy 45 north of Watersmeet Mi. turn left on Robins pond road Half of mile park your car eat your Pasty and wait for the sun to go down.It is there every night. If you don't beleve go see for your-self. Ghost Light.

By Laura Jurgensen, Alaska on Monday, November 27, 2000 - 07:31 pm:

Greetings spiritual fans and CC residents! It looks like a female's face- -perhaps a nun or Eastern European style kerchief often worn by women during the 19th/early 20th C. copper mining days. All I can say for sure is I grew up in an 100+ year old house on Calumet Avenue, Calumet and it was definitely haunted. My family and our friends experienced numerous events over the years. As an adult, I researched the house at MTU archives (C & H Records) and found out more interesting tidbits about this home, who lived in which room and more of its history.

But even though there were a few spirits/ghosts still hanging around this house, I still love it and wish it hadn't left our family. They were present as part of the house, and maybe it made me what I am today - - a nutty anthropologist!! We should all remember to really appreciate the incredible richness of the Copper Country and the historical buildings not razed down for strip malls. Now, the tricky part is getting a good job 'up dere'.

By Joe Nemo, Calumet MI on Wednesday, December 13, 2000 - 09:38 am:

I think this picture is interesting I would hope maybe next year someone would put something exciting in another window. This maybe a big attraction someday. Hey Pasty Central will get more business because of all the tourists.
There are many old haunted houses in Calumet/Laurium area. There are also many old old cemetaries, even ones with caving in gravesites. Pretty Creepy when you walk in them at night. Cliff Mine Cemetary is especially the best attraction. If you want to see some haunted houses, some of our biggest victorian homes have some paranormal happenings that have happened in them. Some of the old homes have had deaths occur which left them haunted. Some of the old mining families just don't want to leave there old home!!!
Don't let anyone tell you different (We do have haunted houses up here). Some just don't want to admit it because they're afraid of the attention they will attract. This is a mining ghost town don't forget!!!

Ghosts are for real, i owend a home in Mosinee
wi. that had a ghost in it. he was not evil!
just missed haveing someone to be with i think
because he would only play tricks like, shakeing
the stairs when your on them or opening the
screen door in the middle of the night, and
nocking things out of my daughts closet at night
and bouncing balls around in my sons room.
And yes a man did pass away in the home before
i bought it from his widow, I think he just
wanted her back again.
And you do get the feeling of cold air for no reason,
I would be doing dishes and all of a sudden i
would get a cold chill behind me?

By Naomi on Wednesday, May 1, 2002 - 06:10 am:

when dogs bark(like they're reallllyyy scared) at a ghost does that mean its a good or evil spirit?
pretty cool pic...

By Nick, Laurium, MI on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 01:31 am:

Went out there to check it out this evening, in the window in which the face appears, there is a board over the window on the inside, with a piece of tar paper shoved in front of it. That pane of glass also has a crack in it. Why the face appears, I dunno, may be something, may be an optical illusion, who knows, but I though I would post what I did see out there this evening.

By Karen Ellery, MN on Monday, July 15, 2002 - 01:27 pm:

Was just up on the Keweenaw a few weeks ago, INSISTED on stopping in Mandan Sunday, 6/30/02 to see this house. Alas, my picture turned out poorly, but my husband & I both agreed on what we saw. There ARE curtains pulled across the window in question, but the odd "reflection" seems pretty clearly to be a patch on the screen, right next to the glass of the window. It's difficult to get a picture of it from the ground or sid angles, things have grown a lot since this first pic was taken. Also looks like the house is falling apart more, too. Just thought I'd add a recent & close up perspective, it certainly intrigued me when I saw it, & introduced me to the wonders of Pastycam (so thanks!).

We belive Hunters Crossing in Channahon Illinois is haunted. Will you please investigate?

By Amber,Indiana on Monday, January 6, 2003 - 07:45 pm:

It could be the light bouncing off the window. It could be many things. I would have to see myself. The house I live, has wierd things going on all the time. Like for example, I had the radio on and it wasn't loud at all. I was just on my floor and all of a sudden it got really loud. It was very strange. I have this one friend that lives in a old house that is over 100 years old. She said it was part of the under ground railroad. It is a creepy house. She says things move. But anyways, that picture you have is wierd, but doesn't mean there is actually a ghost.

By Hidden Valley Creek Tennants, IL on Wednesday, June 11, 2003 - 12:07 pm:

I live in an apartment complex in channahon Il.
I have lived here for some time and we have ghosts. Many tennants of the complex have seen and heard things at all hours of the day. We have tried to get information on the history of this place but even the city has lost the blueprints for it. Last time we checked there wasn't any information whatsoever. These apartments have been owned by many people and we can;tfind the original owners. Rumors state that this used to be a Motel and others state it used to be military housing. At night is when the ghosts seem to walk throughout the premises inside and out. They don't seem to be angry. And one of them is definitley a little girl. Childrens toys get turned on in the middle of the night and many times there are cold masses of air. Our dog will barl at nothing at all. He will stare at the middle of the living room and he seems to be looking at something but nothing is there. He gets real freaked out.If anyon can help us find info regarding this property it would be great!

Why are these homes abandoned anyway? Don't they tear them down? Are these vacation homes around a lake or something?

Thanks for any info.

It takes it's name from an Indian tribe that lived along the Missouri River in North Dakota for many centuries. Does anyone know if there is any connection between this tribe and the town of Mandan, Michigan?
