For several months now we have been bringing you "Shoebox Memories" each Sunday, although it was pre-empted last week because of our month end memorial.

I love these old pictures. Like stepping into a time machine, it's a glimpse of life in the U.P. in the past. Today's shot was given to me by our neighbors in Eagle River, Ernie and Edith Niederer. Edith's father is in the front row, second from the left. A handsome lad.

If you're familiar with this church on Pine Street today, you'll notice the steps and entryway have been enclosed. I'd be curious to know the year it was rebuilt.

There are a couple of kids in the crowd that caught my attention. Notice the boy in the second row, just behind Edith's dad, to his left. He appears to be wearing a girls hat (and doesn't seem too happy about it). On the other hand, the Miss Congeniality award goes to the gal on the bottom step, far right. Probably about 94 if she's still with us today... I wonder who she is?

What a fun picture!
I'll bet there's a few of my relations in there somewhere....they lived at 926 Elevation and 602 Franklin back then.

When they moved to Detroit they joined the Bethleham Finnish Lutheran Church.

This is Pine St. in Calumet and not in Hancock-correct?

By Charlie on Sunday, October 7, 2001 - 10:21 pm:

Yes, the Pine Street in Calumet. The highway which goes from US 41 to McLain State Park, just north of the village.

Just a note thanking Edith for her thoughtful sharing -- she's a stalwart member on the Finlandia University Board of Trustees and is quite a champion of all things both Finnish and Yooper!

Why us it that in so many old pictures the women appear not to be happy and the men very stern in appearance. You never see many smiles (except for the chap in the top row, far left. No wonder the word "cheese" was used while taking pictures. Maybe the faces in this picture were a result of the sermon.

Been there many times...Alot of the faces of the ancestors look so familiar to the faces we see in that very same church today...Testament to the long standing christianity in the community generations and generations past but so many of the names remain the same !

To TB Royal Oak:

Because the picture took several seconds
(minutes?) to capture so they had to hold their
same expression for quite a long time so the
picture wouldn't be blurry and it was probably
easier not to smile.

so true what you said Emily the times may have changed but so many of the names remain the same!

I wasn't born until 1925 but I remember many a sunday being in church from morning til night. We had our lunch and our dinner at the church kitchen (soul food). We were young then and many a time we were told to sit still. Thanks to pasty cam for bringing us memories of our youth.

Does anyone have a listing of all the people in the picture? My grandparents (and father and siblings) were members then and I'd like to find them in the picture.
