More and more each day, when you saunter out for a stroll in the Keweenaw, you notice the subtle changes in the trees. Reminding us that we'll soon have a colder season settling upon us. Rebecca Jennings found examples of that transformation, although not so subtle, along with the beginnings of the carpet that will soon cover wherever you walk. The crunch of the leaves underfoot, the smell of autumn in the air, these are a few of my favorite things. Mother Nature gives us a beautiful spurt of color to enjoy and ease us into the chores of raking, then shoveling. Enjoy the show!

We have had good feedback about our Fall sports coverage over at Pasty.NET, and I just learned yesterday that we will be adding another streaming audio series to the line-up. WMPL in Hancock presents High School basketball on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and Pasty.NET will begin the live broadcasts next Tuesday as Chassell takes on Dollar Bay, beginning at 7:20.

Football fans can tune into Pasty.NET this evening for a game between L'Anse and Baraga, as K-Bear 102's Mr. Norm and Jimmy the Greek bring the play-by-play. Pre-game show begins at 6:40pm.

The fall color is great, we don't get very much fall color in South Georgia. We will be around 90 degrees and we have a hurricane in the forcast.

Good morning from San Jose, CA, where it’s so early it’s still dark outside. I've been trying to figure out how I can condense two weeks in the UP into a short post on the pasty.com chat. So I'm just gonna jump right in with highlights of our trip...

We spent five days in the Keweenaw, driving thru every town we could... The Covered Drive road, lunch in Freda, Quincy Lookout, Gratiot Lake, Lac La Belle, bike riding in Copper Harbor to Manganese Falls, Copper Harbor Lighthouse tour, hiking the Hunters Point trail to the very tip - twice!, Big Traverse Bay, Bootjack Road, White City, Jacobsville. L'Anse - Power House Falls. Big Bay - lighthouse grounds, did laundry (boy is that ever fun on vacation!), Marquette - Presque Isle Park. Paradise - Whitefish Point – so thrilling to be on the very tip of land there - standing on the tip, gazing out on the Big Lake, looking to my left and seeing the north shore, looking to my right and seeing the east shore. Very exciting!! Crisp Point Lighthouse - getting there, on those dirt/gravel remote roads was almost as much fun as being at the lighthouse and the beach once we got there! Went to the very top lookout of the lighthouse - beautiful view! Down to Manistique – Kitch-iti-kipi, Fayette State Park and the garden peninsula. Northwest up to Ontonagon - stopped at Silver City, spent time at Dan Urbanski's studio - bought four prints to mat and frame. Sunset at the beach at Ontonagon; Lake of the Clouds, back to L'Anse to go to Point Abbaye which we missed on the way out. Fun road, and wonderful to hang out at the point there too. All in all, a WONDERFUL trip, and we're both looking forward to a return visit. We called it our UP sampler trip, as we saw a lot of places, but wished we had more time to spend in most of them.

Some random thoughts...

Pastys - after spending six months reading the Pasty.com chat, I couldn't wait to finally try these pastys! We had a total of five - Toni's, Suomi, Tamarack (for the Stillwaters pasty), a Pasty Oven truck in Iron Mountain, and Syl's in Ontonagon. I think our favorite is a tie between Toni's and Stillwaters. All were good, it seemed like the biggest difference (to us novices) was in the crust. Tried it with ketchup, butter, and only one time did anyone offer the sauce. Liked it best plain, or with butter. I'm certainly not an expert on pastys, but we did enjoy them, and now I'm noticing that I'm craving them! I'm sure I'll be ordering some from pasty.com as we get closer to wintertime.

Pasty.com chat finds - Many of the places that we went to I don't think I would've known about if it weren't for the pasty.com chat. Crisp Point, Point Abbaye, Covered Drive road, Big Traverse Bay, Mink Farm Road, the Jacobsville Lighthouse, sweet rolls at the Hilltop Restaurant, the Dreamland Restaurant, Dan Urbanski and his awesome photographs, are just a few that come to mind.

People Connections - Meeting Mary Drew, Tracey at the L'Anse Visitors Center (and bringing her a sweet roll from the Hilltop Restaurant), and Mary Hunt (co-author of the Hunt’s Guide to the UP, a non-Yooper’s bible), were experiences that took our trip to another wonderful level.

Practicing our UP - As we would be driving around, we would be practicing our UP. (as if we were learning a new language and practicing the pronunciation of words in that new language) The hardest for us was Ontonagon and Tahquamenon. I think we finally mastered those names!

Just a few more things… we took 7 rolls of film!!, saw beautiful sunrises over Copper Harbor and Whitefish Bay, an amazing full moon rise over Torch Lake in Lake Linden, and stars galore in the sky! Spent a lot of time picking beautiful rocks, my favorite of souvenirs… as I now have a piece of the UP with me at home.

And the tug of the UP continues for me, only now it’s more intense then before…

Beautiful fall photo! How I would love to be there to see it happen before my eyes. I've been busy all week, but managed to check out the daily pictures. I love the UP, my dad was born in Handcock, still have cousin's there. My wife and I will be comming up there the first week of Ocotober, how are the colors? Hopefully they are only on the way up to peak, not on the way down to the ground! Can anyone give me a "Local Look" at the colors? I like to go from Munising to Copper Harbor to Ontonagon.

One of the best concerts I ever attended was Arlo Guthrie. Somehow there were transportation problems -- the band didn't make connections or something -- and he accompanied himself on a grand piano. Oh, it was wonderful..........!

The colored leaves are just beginning in the maples and birches. We were on Lake Superior at Bete Grise yesterday and had another good fishing day. That isn't to say it was a catching day!! Just one trout and a salmon. Husband grilled the trout and some new potatoes from our daughter and son-in-laws garden. Yum!!!!!!!! Took some pictures of the shore line but not much in the way of colors. It was 84 degrees when we came through Lake Linden at 2:30. I think that is the end of the hot temps.

Danbury: You survived summer and according to Dom you will now be having the good weather!

Top News of the Week

100TH YEAR HOCKEY CELEBRATION GAME IS SATURDAY NIGHT -- A hockey game between Michigan Tech alumni and Detroit Red Wings alumni is set for 7 p.m. in the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The game is part of the weekend-long 100th year celebration of Houghton as the birthplace of professional hockey. The Michigan Tech Pep Band will perform during the game and Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe will be dropping the ceremonial first puck. In addition, former Tech star Paul Coppo will be honored for his upcoming induction into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. Special intermission activities include a Mite game between Houghton Fire and the Red Wing Alumni and also a performance by members of the Copper Country Skating Academy and the Northern Ice Synchronized Skating Team to March Amphridrome. Tickets are available at the SDC Ticket Office. In addition, Gordie Howe will be personalizing his new book, Mr. and Mrs. Hockey, beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in the MTU Sports Hall of Fame area of the Student Development Complex. Those books are available at University Images in the SDC as well as other area outlets.

Up North… I have no connection to this area (other than the internal one that I feel). Was there for the first time in Sept 2000… driving cross country, saw Copper Harbor on the map as being about as remote a place I could go, was mildly intrigued w/the UP then. Just loved it there, wanted to come back with my husband and see more. We decided early this year to go to the UP in late summer, and started checking sites on the internet for our trip planning. Stumbled on this site in February, instantly became hooked. The bug was reawakened and came back stronger then ever!

Marsha… We also missed Bond Falls on our way up to Ontonagon, which we didn’t know it was something to miss until we saw Dan Urbanski’s photos, and we practically drove right by them!! Darn!

It's 'officially' Fall here also..but no signs of color...we're actually in the South..below the Mason-Dixon line ( but both natives of Bessemer in the western UP).

My cousin Paul told me about a friend who picked up native copper from the poor rock piles, painted it with silver model paint and sold it on the street as "Native Silver". You don't have any silver yet, do you?

By the way, I tried the Toivo and Eino's Super Secret Sauce this week (on a Barbs Copper Country Kitchen pasty). There's no more ketchup for me!

My aunt used to tell me she liked her pasty with mustard. I guess I made a face 'cause she said, "Don't knock it 'til you try it!" But I haven't tried it, yet. I like mine with butter, OK, oleo and a little bit of ketchup, or catsup, whatever. Haven't tried mayonaisse, either. Eeeewwww. My mom and my aunts and uncles liked buttermilk with their pasties. I like chocolate milk with mine. Or Ovaltine (malted) in the 1%. Mimi takes hers with 0%. (skim) Eewwww. Dat skim moo juice looks like dishwater.

F cubed--I like the language lessons. Especially as my Grandma would say "tovi" instead of uuni as she grew up in Superior and doesn't always remember the real word!

Special pasty sauce I can deal with. Ketchup is normal, ditto butter. Gravy is just wrong, but done enough to make it simply uneducated. Unfortunately, there is Cornish precedence for chow chow and mustard (which chow chow is made with), but I'm sorry...mayo? A1? I say we send out the gerbil to handle the intervention!

I grew up having mine with mustard, and a big glass of cold milk.

I wonder how many of you remember having to find colorful leaves and having to bring them into grade school as a class assignment, and soon the rainy season will hit followed by that first small hail storm and then the snow begins, I remember a lot of snowy Halloweens or rain when I was a kid so long ago, I really miss the weather in calumet, you could always tell when fall, winter, spring and summer was there just by the smell of the air, not like down here or else my since of smell is gone, How lucky you all are to have the privilege of living there.

as I said, it is chow chow for me (cross and blackwells is the best, but it is so hard to find) ... but, my Mother has always loved buttermilk with her pasties and hers are the best!
