Hi, I am truly enjoying your website. I wanted to order some "I Love Pasties" tote bags from The Gift Nook, but when I click 'to order', I just get a blank page. I'd sure appreciate it you'd let me know how to order them. Thank you so much.

Ellen

Ooops! On the last day of September we moved all of our domains over to a new, faster server. Still a few bugs to get worked out. Thanks for the report.

By Bill Penprase on Thursday, September 30, 1999 - 05:16 pm:

Thank you for remembering "AUNT ANN", Ann(Hebbard) Biekkoa in your monthly tribute -- I've never had the courage to call her Annie after the first time I tried it as a little boy. She was my mother's sister and was like a second mother to my sisters and me. For many ,many years she worked in the Mohawk post office and knew everyone, including every kid in Mohawk and Fulton. Later she married and she and her husband,Bill, built the Red Sands Resort in Lac La Belle. Ann was never too busy to help anyone who needed help. Over the years,my wife and I with our children spent many happy weeks in Lac La Belle with her and still reminisce about those times. Again, THANK YOU.

I just posted the letter below and noticed I spelled Pasty wrong.

By Mom, in Washington State on Wednesday, September 29, 1999 - 07:38 pm:

Hello Patsy lovers, (or should I say Yoppers... Whatever that means : )
My daughter Angela, moved to Hubbell last month. We miss her sooo much... She met a young man on-line in January and he linked her to your site. She would view it everyday as they talked about all the wonderful places you so beautifully display. It was SO BEAUTIFUL that she fell in love with the Keweenaw... and her young man. I now view your site daily in hopes that you will show Hubbell (somewhere around Kessler Street: ) But I really enjoy all the wonderful pictures of the U.P. I now use your website to show all of our family and friends where Ang is.

Thank you for keeping me so close to my daughter when she is so terribly far away.... p.s We love you Ang Louise.

By J. Stanley, Cornwall, UK on Wednesday, September 29, 1999 - 01:31 pm:

Thanks for the "I Love Pasties" T-Shirt I received today. It was a lovely surprise, I couldn't wait to show all the neighbours. I am sure it will create a lot of interest locally here in Cornwall the home of the "Oggies" (Cornish Pasties).

I can see this site is going to activate a lot of "across the pond" communication and it won't be long before visitors in person both ways will be occurring on a regular basis.

All the best and may your crimpers never tire.

Joe Stanley

Joe earned an "I Love Pasties" T-shirt by being the first to send us a newspaper from Great Britain featuring an article about Pasty Central

By Charlie in Calumet on Tuesday, September 28, 1999 - 11:03 pm:

Some folks reported that Pasty Central appeared to be down for a while today. We have moved the domain to a faster server... please let us know if you encounter any problems, and thanks for visiting Pasty Central. :o)

By FSmith on Tuesday, September 28, 1999 - 02:42 pm:

Greetings from So. Cal! I know it's hard for the UP'ers reading this to imagine, but it's 'Pasty Weather' in LA - foggy and cool. There are 3 of us here in the office with ties to the UP and we're ready for our delivery! Thanks for making it so easy to satisfy our craving for the ultimate 'comfort food.' Best, Francesca, Derek and Jeff. Say, who else in Woodland Hills, California is ordering pasties? We should all 'do lunch.'

By john--wisconsin on Monday, September 27, 1999 - 12:00 pm:

Have you considered having your photos printed and possibly made into jigsaw puzzles?

By Corey Bruno, New York on Saturday, September 25, 1999 - 12:48 pm:

Hey Pasty Cam!

I was a resident of the UP until I moved to New York City to attend college. If there is an apect of the UP other than the beautiful scenery that I miss, it is high school football games. Any chance we could see those mighty Lakes of Lake Linden or the Bessemer Speedboys in action? How about some crowd shots at a Gremlins' game?

Love the page - keep up the good work.

Corey Bruno

By Debbie Kahila on Saturday, September 25, 1999 - 11:57 am:

I love this site. I really like all the photos they remind me of all the great places I ventured while going to NMU in the mid 80's. I spent more time admiring the UP and all the great little out of the way places there are and all the great people, then I did going to classes.

I really miss living up there. I last visited when my husband built on the addition on Lake State's new building.

By Richard S. Shaffer, Lower Michigan on Friday, September 24, 1999 - 12:46 pm:

You seem to have slipped your date a bit if you will check your calendar. Other than that I love to stop by and check out your latest offerings.

Whoops! All week we were off by a day. Thanks for noticing!

By Roger Somero CA on Friday, September 24, 1999 - 03:16 am:

I check your site every day-been to most of the places you show. Brings back many good memories. I was surprised to see the Somero Family farm. Same name, another branch of the family. Thanks for the great site.

By Stan Kotajarvi: MI on Thursday, September 23, 1999 - 04:48 pm:

I remember the old swing bridge between Hancock and Houghton, but what kind of bridge was before that? I know from old photos that at one time there was a wooden bridge, but I don't know if the present bridge is the third or fourth. Can anyone enlighten me? Any dates on when the bridges were built?

By Ellen, Florida on Thursday, September 23, 1999 - 12:50 am:

Paiva! I just spent a week in Hancock for my family reunion. Not enough time. I was born and raised in Hancock and am so proud to see "pasties" online!!! I've just started reading the pages on your website and am very impressed. Have to tell everyone! Especially my brother Tom who loves Vollwerth's maughata (sp)?...sausage. He loves pasty, too, of course. Who doesn't?
Thank you so much for bringing a bit of the U.P. to me! I love it. A Florida Finn, Ellen

By Andrea H. Woodbridge, Virginia on Wednesday, September 22, 1999 - 06:49 pm:

Hey all...Just want to say what a super terrific service you have going. I was pretty homesick one day ( grew up in the U.P.) and surfing around and thought," I wonder if there is a pasty.com.?" and sure enough..there you were. Although a trip back to Newberry would have made me smile, getting a taste of home did just the trick. My boyfriend who had NO clue what a pasty was, loves them..I got him to eat them the sophisticated way, with gravy, not ketchup. I look forward to ordering more when my current supply runs out. Thanks for the quick service and great pasties, and on one last note...the east coast sure isn't as friendly as the Upper Penninsula of Michigan, and when you can figure out how to market Yooper hospitality, let me know. =0) Thanks, Andrea

By John on Tuesday, September 21, 1999 - 11:42 am:

Just wondering. Is a resident of Florida considered a "Looper" for "Lower Peninsula?"

Sometimes Yoopers call Lower Michigan folks "Lowpers", but more often they're known as "trolls" (below the bridge) :0)

By Paul Roberts, NC on Tuesday, September 21, 1999 - 05:49 am:

When I came to visit this past summer one of the sights I enjoyed the most was the walk I took down the beach by Gitche Gumee. I can't remember the name of the bay I walked to but I know it was about 4 miles from the camp. If you could tell me what bay that is and possibly post a picture of it I'd appreciate it!

That was Great Sand Bay, and we have featured pictures on several occasions. Here's the sign from June of last year:

Great Sand Bay

By Sue on Monday, September 20, 1999 - 02:13 pm:

Enjoyed seeing the recent downtown shot of Hancock. I would love to see one further back, down near the Kaleva Cafe and in the area where Joffee's Men's Store used to be. That is where I lived (nearly five years). We lived upstairs in an apartment from 1957 until Januuary 1962. Thanks for all the lovely photographs.

I was born in the up, I moved to Florida when I was in the third grade. Florida has been my home for more years than I care to admit. But ever sence my mother has passed on and I brought her home for buriel I feel myself drawn home. I feel a big pull to go home, I am proud of my yooper roots, to this day I argue that I am a Floridian I am a yooper and proud of it.

Our annual August visit to our cottage in Misery Bay seems like a long time ago already but seeing pictures on the Pasty-Cam makes it seem real again. Sorry we missed stopping by Still Waters this trip - we love you all!!

By D. Tilghman, Virginia on Saturday, September 18, 1999 - 05:30 am:

I have enjoyed www.pasty.com SO much, I just had to write. I'm a Virginia gal, born and bred, and after reading Lillian Jackson Braun's "Cat Who" books for years, I took a notion recently to try to make the pasties mentioned frequently in her books. So I surfed the Net and came upon your site. I also found lots of recipes from folks from upper Michigan and I plan to try one soon. I've had a geography lesson in all of this, also, because I never realized there was an "Upper Penninsula" of Michigan. I've enjoyed the cam shots and links. The area up there seems absolutely beautiful...what a lovely part of the country.

So this is just a note of thanks for the great web site. I plan to visit it often.

Have you ever considered a yearly calendar using the beautiful "Pasty Cam" pictures? A good start would be the Sept. 14th picture at Isle Royal. "Sights and Scenes" of the Copper Country. We enjoy the daily pictures and look forward to each day to see what Jonathan has selected.

By Debbie in Arizona on Thursday, September 16, 1999 - 05:25 pm:

I have my native Arizona husband hooked on your
Pastys. They were great!! We will be talking to
you again soon.

For all those in Pasty land that prayed for those of us out east, thank you! It was greatly appreciacted.

By Lois Hart, Catalina Island, California on Wednesday, September 15, 1999 - 10:51 am:

The "big picture" of Ford Fisheries on Isle Royale with fishing shanties and boats, wildfloweres, etc. is BEGGING to be an oil painting! Please, someone with the gift, do get that on canvas. Great composition, photographers!

We actually had a misprint on the name: it should be "Edisen Fishery", not Ford. Thanks for the note!

By Paul Roberts, NC on Wednesday, September 15, 1999 - 09:05 am:

To all those who will not encounter hurricane floyd please pray for those of us who will. It would be greatly apreciated by everyone on the east coast. Thanks!

By Stan Kotajarvi on Monday, September 13, 1999 - 03:42 pm:

I was born in Rockland, but my memories are of Hancock and Laurium where we lived until I was about 12. Then we moved to Detroit, but made it back to the Copper Country almost every year. Now living near Lansing, I still love to walk the streets of those towns and drive up to Copper Harbor. The next time I'm in Calumet, I will have to stop in at Pasty Central. Do you have a dining area for customers,or is it strictly take-out? Keep up the great work. Seeing your web-site sure brings back memories.

Sometimes we have pasty picnics in our garden, but usually folks just carry them out.

Hi, my computer was down for a while so I couldn't log on every day to get the latest picture. I have it fixed and have gotten cought up, they are all so wonderful. We will be up in Calumet on the 23 of Sept. I plan to stop in to meet all you wonderful people. Thank you for a wonderful trip down memory land and keep them coming.

By Bill Penprase California on Saturday, September 11, 1999 - 03:12 pm:

You people are amazing - everytime I think that you will never find a picture as great as the one you're showing you do it again. I'm referring to the shot of the moon over Sand Bay (who was with Jonathan when he took that shot?) and then you come up with that beautiful shot of Eagle Harbor at sundown and the light just rotated in the best position. But today I must take exception to your comment on the picture of Ray & Carole Krueger. That "ANCIENT PIPE" was put there when I was a young man and I am not ancient yet. It was fed by a real good spring and we often had picnics there and enjoyed the water until the State made the County disconnect it because it was not properly chlorinated for public drinking.

Back to the subject-- At least I don't feel ANCIENT :o) You are forgiven :o) :o)

By Nancy Nelson on Friday, September 10, 1999 - 07:45 pm:

Thank you very much for the reply on cemeteries. Evergreen has been my favorite for many, many years. My mother and I spent hours exploring and sympathizing with the brave people who settled the area we love so much. Focus on some of the gravestones that tell the history of the area so eloquently.

By John--Wisconsin on Friday, September 10, 1999 - 02:13 pm:

In today's big picture (9/10), the only red I saw was from the geraniums! :)

Regarding pictures of cemeteries, I, too, would like to see them. Maybe the week before and the week after Hallowe'en? Hallowe'en (or "All Saints' [Hallowed] Day) was traditionally when the church remembered those who had passed on.

By Bruce Fraser-Missouri on Friday, September 10, 1999 - 08:24 am:

I, too, would be interested in seeing a picture of the yard that Patti-Tenn wrote of on 9/5/99. I recall the house being on Hwy. 41, on the left side, going to Copper Harbor. We intended to stop and purchase some whirligigs while we were visiting but passed by the last time before daylight. If you could help in getting the owners' name I would appreciate it.

Love the Eagle Harbor lighthouse, but... how about prowling some of the Keweenaw cemeteries and sharing some of the history of the area through the ones who were there first. Eagle River, Eagle Harbor, and Copper Harbor have fascinating cemeteries, and I'm sure there are many more.

Here's the Evergreen Cemetery from the Pasty Cam archives. We'll try to visit some of the others in our area this fall

Near Eagle River

How about some shots of the iron mine and Big John down in Iron Mountain? Or is Iron Mountain too close to the Wisconsin border?

By P. Parnall, Maine on Wednesday, September 8, 1999 - 09:39 am:

Pasty delivery schedule is fine. I've ordered here and there.... you folks make the best ones of all. I'm tempted to retire up there so I won't have to wait!

Is there anyone at the home old enough to remember Wm.Parnall, Jr... he was the super at Tamarack? (Starting in 1903, when his father Wm. Parnall Sr. died. He was my great-grandpa).
Sincerely,
Peter Parnall

Maybe some of our viewers would remember the name

By J. Montgomery of New York on Tuesday, September 7, 1999 - 08:30 pm:

How about some shots of the Negaunee area, including the mines?

The Pasty Cam does occasionally wander outside of the Keweenaw, so we'll keep that in mind next time we go Marquette, eh?

By Kay Hoganson-California on Sunday, September 5, 1999 - 04:57 pm:

I was really touched to see my Mom, Nina Hoganson's name listed on the friends we've lost, recently. She was one amazing woman and Ninabelle, as my Dad called her, made a plan on how she wanted to die and God approved of her plan. He let her die at home, with her children at her bedside and in the summer. Her 10 children miss her terribly, as does her other family members and friends. Thank you.

By Patti -- Tenn. on Sunday, September 5, 1999 - 11:59 am:

There's a house in Bumbletown whose yard is FULL of the yard art and decorations that are unique to the UP and Northern WI. How about a picutre of that colorful yard for the Pasty Cam?

By Frank Greene with today's news on Saturday, September 4, 1999 - 10:51 pm:

Earlier today over on the sunrise side of the Keweenaw, there was a "pre-birthday" celebration for Lucille Perrong, who will be 100 years next month.  The other lady is Hayley Verbison, her great-great-niece, who is about 99 years younger than Lucille.  This  party was held so that Lucille could come out to the cottage that she bought in 1934.  Relatives came from as far as Colorado and New Mexico,  with lots more from downstate.  Neighbors and friends came from Laurium and Calumet and from along the cottage road at Bete Grise.  Lucille still lives in Laurium in her own home (with assistance).

Cheerio,
Frank

Happy Birthday Lucille! Bet you've made a few pasties in your day !

By John on Friday, September 3, 1999 - 01:09 pm:

If any Yoopers stumble south to Appleton (like, when you miss Lambeau Field), or anyone going up to God's UP Country and are going through (tru?) Appleton, stop at Julie's Breakfast Club. If I told you the size of the pancakes and cinnamon rolls, you wouldn't believe me! It's on Midway Road, between Appleton and Menasha. Take US 441 to Highway 47, then go South. Take Hwy 47 until you get to Midway Road, then go east and Julie's Breakfast Club is right there, about a block or two away from the corner. You won't forget it once you've been there!

We loved Uncle John he is greatley missed . He always had a story or a smile .

Karla - in the note above - is refering to the photo at the bottom of this page. In the next 2 posted notes it appears that "Jeanie" in Michigan has a second cousin "Jeannie" in California. They also both refer to the photo at the bottom of this month's page. John's jacket reminds us the cold weather will soon be here.

All of us here at Pasty Central are delighted to read your notes. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the U.P. and its people :o)

Well that's my great uncle John Schindler, I still have the agate Jewelry he made for me when I was a young girl. Each of us great-nieces recieved one they were mice pins with an agate body. I am in California on the Monterey Peninsula. Thanks for the memories. Jeannie Oliveria

Would miss your website if it would go off.

Charlie,
Thanks for the photo of Finns Lake (Thayers).
It sure looks different from what I remember.
Spent many summer days swimming there.

By Martin, Cornwall, UK on Wednesday, September 1, 1999 - 02:40 am:

Enjoyed your page after seeing a reference in our weekly paper, the Cornish Guardian. Our family occasionally spoils itself with two variations on the theme. 1) Make a small cut in the top of a meat pasty and add clotted cream. 2) In the unlikely event of having left over pasties, cut them like fish collops and fry them for breakfast.

Cornish copper miners also worked at Cerro Muriano in Andalucia in Spain in the first half of this century. Can any pasty fans help me with information about that mine??

We have received email from many foreign countries, but none yet from Spain. Bueños días, tiene usted un pasty amanté?

By Jeanie Schindler on Wednesday, September 1, 1999 - 01:20 am:

Some of the happiest time of my life were agate hunting with my Dad on the beach at Five Mile Point. On the photo below, note the pole on the right with the spoon on top to dip in the lake for a stone way out.

I'm still enjoying your Pasty Cam. Worth turning on my computer just to see it. Keep it up... the pictures are beautiful.

Fondly, Jeanie
