The annual snowfall contest is back at George's Eagle Harbor Web. Some impressive prizes for the best forecasters... pasties for the monthly winners, and a dinner cruise or a week in Harbor Web's guest cottage for the big winner. Will we have light snowfall as in recent years, or a record 400+ inches?? It's anybody's guess.

Well, I was hoping Toivo got his laptop fixed and could resume his weekday Cam-editing duties, but here it is after 9:30am and no Toivo. When last we heard, he was rambling the Australian outback and missing the U.P. Wonder if possibly he's on the way home? Will he make it to Hawaii? Will he get a digital camera that works? Stay tuned.

Lake Superior in all her splendor.....what a shot! Looks like a good day to be "on shore" rather than "off shore"!! :-)

By JoAnne, Washington State on Wednesday, October 8, 2003 - 10:38 am:

Charlie or others,

Do we know if Eagle Harbor Webmaster, George Hite is o.k? As memory serves, he's usually got the site up and running by now. I'm worried about him!

Thanks!

George's site is "slowly recovering from hibernation"......according to George himself, also as evidenced by his annual snowfall contest being open.

Did anyone else see the eage over the bridge on the Bridge cam yesterday afternoon? I'm sure it was a bald eagle but would like some confirmation.

I recall this lighthouse use to sit way far back. Has erosion occurred from Superior pounding at the shoreline? Or is it my imagination.

By Missin the UP from NJ on Wednesday, October 8, 2003 - 04:34 pm:

Yesterday's picture was a beautiful quiet "painting" and today's "painting" brings the word magnificent to mind.
There are just too many gorgeous pictures. I love them all!
I put them in my pictures and set it as my screensaver. I have to admit to going to the computer and "waking" it to see all those pics over and over! Ahhh... love the UP.
Thanks over and over to all the GREAT photographers.

I have had a love for lighthouses on the Great Lakes for many years and Eagle Harbor Lighthouse has always been my favorite. This tremendous photo clearly explains why, and has certainly made my day! Thanks!

Just got home from three great days in Keweenaw County. Stayed in our trailer at Fannie Hoe. The colors are great, a good mixture of greens, golds, reds, etc. This am driving by Lake Bailey was absolutely stunning! I was very surprised to see that the County Road Commission fixed the road to the mouth of the Gratiot River, you can drive in there with a car now (not sure that is a good thing but----). We found quite a few nice agates there. Also watched some fellows planting "coaster brook trout" in the Gratiot.

You know, I look at the picture every day and it is usually pretty cool. I never make comments about the pasty cam pic of the day... but this is a wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow. I love how the foreground is dark and the sun is out on the waves. It looks dark and ominous, yet peaceful and calming. I can almost hear those waves crashing....

What an incredible picture.

My wifes sister is a volenteer at the Sand Island Light house in the Apostle Islands neer Bayfield Wisconsin. That Light house was built from the same set of blueprints. We spent three days with them last month. We had wind and waves but no picture.

I graduated Tech in 63 and this picture really brings you home.

By Mike, MI on Thursday, October 9, 2003 - 01:16 pm:

Toivo,
Where are you. Hawaii has waves but not like these. The only color you'll be seeing is white, if you don't hurry home.

This picture will be my wallpaper for quite a while. Incredible display of our Creator's handiwork.

When I was a kid in Houghton, very close friends of my mother were the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse Keepers. I actually got to sleep in that tower bedroom once. Now I know what a rare privilege that was.

By Charlotte, El Paso, Texas on Thursday, February 24, 2005 - 03:48 pm:

I spent a couple memorable days in Bayfield last June with my daughter of Appleton, WI, and have been looking for live webcams to see what the area looks like in winter. (Daughter explained to me the reason the fire hydrants sat so high on the curb was so they wouldn't get hit by snowplows when the snow was three feet deep.) My search brought me to your site, and what a reward, even if the image isn't live. As an active amateur photographer and lighthouse fan, I can tell you that is one gorgeous photo! Sure wish I were a bit younger and more able to scramble in the cold so I could visit in winter and capture a few shots like that.
