Where are all the trees???

Lumbering has always impressed me, but man, thats a lot of iron!

This looks like the old sawmill on Torch Lake....I think it was Gregorie's...

when/where were these photos taken? lack of trees in background suggests gathering of equipment to move on to new area to log. appears it took two men to operate the big cats. quite an inventory of various model machines. keep the shoe box photos coming. always interesting topics.

I only know that his mother gave us them also have more of the same but l like to know who the others are so I could put on the the back of the picture I also Have Harvey Waters as a scout Leader Dale if your there I would like your E-mail address as I have these an more also when you were younger.

Wow, Therese! I noticed the name "DuLong" and I had to call my mom to see if we're related. Sure enough, my mom, Shirley, is your cousin, her parents are Harold & Florence Dulong ! We tune in to the pasty cam daily to get our "fix" as we are currently transplanted in ND and we miss Michigan. So much so, we plan to move back to the U.P. this summer. Was so neat to see a familiar name on our favorite site!

I had my dad, Jim Sarazin look at these pictures and he thought that this could be back in the days of culver lumber co.

Someone asked about haveing two people on each cat. most likely one was the driver and one was the hooker. Have seen pictures from up there of loads as big as that being pulled either horses or oxen. Someone that knows about those old cats might be able to tell you about what year they are and that would give you somekind of a time frame as to when these pictures were taken. I allways enjoy the old pictures of the logging days.

Kinda reminds me of the Sahara Forest before Paul Bunyan got there. Know what I mean, Vern? Now they call it the Saraha Desert. :o)

They look weird without blades on the front of them. This looks like this was in the late thirtys or early forties to me...... but it's kewl

T Sarazin....If anyone would know it is Jim Sarazin...He knows and cares about the history and folks of the area........The Sarazin famly is one of the most interesting, pioneer, Copper Country families.

The photos were probably taken along the shores of Torch Lake at a sawmill site. The hills in the back ground could be up behind the Maple Leaf on the Bootjack Road. A lot of logs were Hauled there from the Rice Lake and Mud Lake areas by Stern & Culver and the Bonifas Lumber Co. Before the tractors They were hauled by horses and sleds in the winter. They would have to put sand on the steeper slopes to keep the log loads from running into the back of the horses on the downhill slopes The tractors used were most likely Holts. Jim (Buckwheat) Sarazin Would know a lot more about this. He is quite a historian of the local area.

These pictures are great. What I am curious about, is what kind of trees did they get, oak, pine, maple etc.?
