In the course of photographing some of the 'Special Places' presently held by International Paper, Dan Urbanski came across the Clark Mine this week. Bet this was a busy place 100+ years ago. Pretty quiet now. I like the little pine on the smokestack.

Wah! Was California huge! So much to see, so little time, but I got to move on. So hot here. Cools me off just thinkin about the U.P. More later from the Grand Canyon State.

I remember when the Mackinaw Bridge was closed because of snow....and it was the first week in MAY, 1960.......Keep thinking spring for another month anyhow..don't give up yet!!

I use to go up to a place called Aubrey Falls in Ontario.We would go thru Sault St Marie to Thesalon and then up Hwy 129. Had some land up there on the Mississauga .But we also fished in a lot of places in the UP and camped out there.Sure wish I was there now instead of here in WY where people forgot how to laugh.Mom is 86 in Apache Junction,AZ and in asst living.They don't laugh there either.Who is Toivo? Maybe he can go see her and get her to laugh again. Thanks for all the pleasure you have given me on here.I spent 4 hours yesterday reading .By the way.Snow coming in again today.And it always goes straight to Michigan from here. Pat

I am a female,60, disabled and live in Las Vegas.
I didn't ever fish in the U.P. but sure did enjoy visiting. Such beautiful country and nice people. My Grandfather was a Game Warden in the area. I beleive his brother was a doctor there also. My father and his three sisters were born and raised there. All are gone now though. Sure wish I could visit again, but impossible. So this site is great. First place I visit every day. Anyway, would love to hear from you or anyone from the U.P. I still enjoy a good laugh.

I have been to the beautiful states of Wyoming and also Arizona.Believe me,Pat,people in those states do know how to laugh.Just try offering a smile and a pleasant "Good Day", you will get a response I will guarantee.

The good people of the UP do, however, have a wonderful way of poking fun at themselves that is infectuous (sp?) and very charming.

What with the recent snow and all I was just wondering about something I read in the paper this morning. The Chicago Tribune devotes an entire page to the weather -- some of you may be familiar with Tom Skilling, a most devoted and admired weatherman on TV and in print -- and one of the things on this page is a definition of a weather term. This morning the term was "time-release rain," and the definition was "a term used by people in northern Wisconsin and Michigan to describe snow after March 31." Anybody ever heard of that before?

Nita . If you are a tourist here in WY spending your money they love you. If you live here without a husband or a lot of money and take up their precious space they do not like you. There is a saying here that even if you live here 50 years you are still not a native of WY.That is why this is the least populated state. Less then 1/2 million people in the whole state.There is a lot I can't say on this forum . Still wish I was back in the Great Lakes.

Doing a little research on calumet where I grew up and foud out how close I lived to tamarack shaft house and came across a few pictures from the 1900's and I was wondering if there are any maps of the undergrond shafts in relation to the streets and homes of the area as I have read that all the tamarack mines were interconnected, you could walk from one shaft to another shaft and come out at a different shaft house. Under calumet it must look like a giant ant colony.

Hope you enjoy your visit here in Arizona! You must admit, our weather is gorgeous. I've been away from the UP for almost 45 years, but still call it HOME and I especially miss the autumn leaves and the snow. Can't tell you how pleased I am to have found this Web site!

I CANNOT WAIT TO COME HOME IN JUNE. IM HERE IN DIEGO GARCIA SUPPORTING OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM . I MISS THE U.P SO VERY MUCH AND CAN NOT WAIT TO SPEND A COUPLE OF WEEKS ON LEAVE.
