Finally made the trip to the top of Mt. Bohemia by means of modern technology (chair lift). Skied the hill for years while going to school at Tech. Even in my youthful prime, I could get two, maybe three hikes up the hill before I was wiped out for the day. The idea of the mountain being "commercialized" was a tough pill for me to personally swallow. However, I was glad the folks that developed the hill kept true to the Bohemian form. I was happy to see many of my runs through the horseshoe bowl's still untouched (are just barely ski-able). Definitely not for the faint of heart. Congratulations to Pasty Central as it begins year number 6 of daily coverage on the Pasty Cam. For all who are new to the site, you can browse by month, week and day by following the links on the current Pasty Cam page. The archives have all of the pictures which have been featured during the past 5 years. By Kathi, near Detroit on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 04:28 am:
Toivo said: If you live within the coverage area of WJR in Detroit (760 AM), you can catch Charlie on the Internet Advisor program with Gary Baker and Foster Braun this afternoon (Saturday) between 5-5:30pm, as they reminisce about this milestone for pasty.com. By Mike, Michigan on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 05:36 am: Happy 5th Pasty Cam. This is the first place I look every morning. The pictures are always wonderful, and the comments from everyone always enlightening. Here's to the next 5 and many more beyond. By www.deyampert.com on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 08:00 am:

Thank you Toivo for the fine job you have done over the past several weeks of keeping us charmed with our daily trip to the U.P. via pasty cam. This too is usually my first stop of the morning...a delightful way to start my day. By Northern Lights Lodge, Cadillac on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 09:05 am: Happy 5th Birthday Pasty.com! Thanks to all who make it possible. By Francis... S. M. Wi. on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 09:35 am: ' Tip of the hat' to all who make this site as great as it is. Thank you. I have been looking in daily since 1999. It gives us a daily taste of the good old Copper Country. By www.deyampert.com on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 11:17 am:
The more I look at the 2nd photo the more I want to call it a WOW not just tremendous. This photograph is suitable for the calendar. By Charlie and Edie in Waterford, MI on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 11:20 am:
Toivo, nice choices on the Wallpaper of the Week while we have been away. Just tuned in this morning from our Pasty.NET dial-in in Pontiac and saw the lovely variety from contributors over the past month:
After the visit to WJR late this afternoon, we'll be heading north. We've had a good time touring about 10 states, but like Dorothy said... There's no place like home :o) By Proud Yooper - MI on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 12:54 pm: The second picture is a WOW in my books. Should be called The Lone Tree. It reminds me of the only tree in a farmer's field. We had one that was about 100 years old and finally had to be cut down because it was rotted. I undertand they kept one tree in the field for lightening as lightening will strike the tallest thing. Correct? By P.K. Miller, Nashville, TN on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 12:55 pm: Loved the picture. A lot longer than Mt. Ripley. Someone wrote that time seems to stand still in the U.P. I agree. Whenever I get home the time slows down, life is not hectic. That is one of my major reasons for not wanting commercialism and lots of tourists in the Keweenaw, Copper Country. I know this is selfish. I don't even live there now. I know people need to be employed. I would hate to see snowmobiles coming up my street or across my yard. I never want the beauty of the area to be ruined for the almighty dollar. Not many places left that have more trees than people. By Jerry MacInnes, Arizona on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 01:07 pm: Have enjoyed the photos of home while spending time in Arizona. It's a great way to share the beauty of the Keweenaw with my friends here. By Ima_Yooper on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 01:13 pm:
************************************************** By Alice A., Alaska on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 01:26 pm: Thanks very much, Toivo, for keeping things moving along while Charlie was gone. You've done a great job! And while I'm at it, congratulations to everyone who takes part in this daily feast for the eyes and the mind. It's a real pleasure to meet all of you via pasty.com. By Victor P., Houston Tx on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 05:53 pm:
This is one of my favorite web sites. I think I could stand on that mountain top all day long and stare out on the beautiful scenery. They would have to send someone up at nightfall to fetch me down. By Dam Guy, Parasite Creek on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 05:55 pm: Patsy Cline and the Pasty Cam live on! Great shots of Bohemia, but I miss the old days with the fire tower up top and a great XC crash-and-burn ride down... picking blueberries behind the beach at Betty Griz and casting KO Wobblers for salmon off the pier. Had my first dip of snuff on the Gratiot and geez, guess I better stop before I break down and cry... By pikkuleipa on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 06:18 pm: By JBM ..Warren Mi. on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 11:04 pm: Keep up the good work. This is my favorite web site for the last 3 years. Thanks By Dave Love, Lansing on Sunday, March 2, 2003 - 10:16 am:
Andrew, thanks for the memories. My son and I skied Mt. Bohemia for the first time on Saturday. It was definitely our best ski experience in the midwest. As the sign on the lift says "expert skies only". I was challenged, my son was exhilerated. By David S. - FL. on Sunday, March 2, 2003 - 12:26 pm: Thanks for the years of my daily "yooper fix". Out of couriousity, how many hits does this site average per day. Just wondering. By Liz C., Ohio on Sunday, March 2, 2003 - 04:40 pm: Thank you for reminding me of what Mt. Bohemia looks like. I just love that ski hill!! I was very disappointed that I missed out on skiing it over my Christmas break, and I hope the snow stays so I can enjoy it a little during my spring break. I miss the beauty of the UP... By Andrew Bayley - Dearborn, MI on Monday, March 3, 2003 - 08:57 am:
Thanks for all the kind words folks. By AS--MI on Monday, March 3, 2003 - 09:33 pm: Looks like a piece of cake to me. Enjoy the ride before the snow melts in May. By Mark Gilles, Lakeland, Florida on Thursday, March 6, 2003 - 03:45 pm: Makes me miss the snow and the people. By Sarah, MI on Thursday, March 6, 2003 - 04:25 pm: these photographs are absolutely stunning Andrew. Have you considered quitting your job and touring the U.S. to take pictures. That sounds like a great idea. Maybe you could take your sister with you |
