While out for a walk in the Keweenaw woods, Bob Gilreath came across this delicate Pink Lady's Slipper, which is a member of the orchid family. These beauties are endangered in some places, because they take so long to grow, so it's a good idea to follow Bob's example and just take a fantastic photo of it and leave it in the woods. It's actually illegal to pick or move them in Michigan.

The Trillium photos come from Barb Bouwkamp. She spotted this patch of them on her way to Ontonagon and stopped to snap a few photos to share. The Great White Trillium is a member of the lily family and also takes many years to recover if picked. In Michigan, Minnesota and New York, it's illegal to pick them without a permit, so again, please take Barb's lead and just photograph them to enjoy framed on your wall.

Surgery went well. They removed the right side of here parathyroid and a large nodule off her thyroid. She's resting and coming around, a little groggy.

She says she's in pain but that they'd be in with pain meds shortly. That's all I know!

What beautiful and unique flora! Too rare to just call them 'flowers'.

If these pictures were taken recently, it shows clearly how spring comes later to the northern UP. We generally see a good mix of trillium, yellow ladyslipper and columbine in the Headlands (a park near Mackinaw City) on Memorial Day weekend. This [odd] year, the trillium were pretty much all done. Downstate, the trillium are, in a standard year, out by Mother's Day or the week before.

Day in History...... Let us also not forget 6 June 1944 began the invasion of Normandy.

The modern inhabitants of the U.P. seem to enter their Spring forest lands, with the ephemeral flowers on display, furtively.....accompanied by a silence so profound, a stillness so complete, that ones soul feels penetrated by a sort of religious exaltation. Love the time of year these photos represent!

I've seen lots of trilliums, but that was a couple of weeks ago. Our
lupines are all but over. I haven't seen a lady slipper in a long, long
time. Maybe next year. How beautiful.
