Past-E-Mail: Cam Notes - 2012: January: Jan 04-12 |
By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 - 07:10 pm:
These shots were snapped by Urpo Vuorinen, about a mile or so, east of Eagle River, with temperatures in the teens and 40 mph plus winds. After reading that in Urpo's email, I was thinking that he was a pretty brave man to be standing out there snapping photos with the weather raging around him like that. Here's what he had to say about the day: "Mother Nature was calling for me to come out and play beach ball with her but I could only manage some pictures before my fingers wouldn't function very well in the cold. The ice balls ranged in size from one inch to over 3 ft. in diameter. By the next day they were gone or frozen into the icy bank. I guess Mother Nature took her beach balls and left because I wouldn't play with her."Interesting formations indeed, sitting there looking like frosted rocks along the shoreline. Yet another remarkable product of our Great Lake Superior! By Karen Benton (Nerakthenice178) on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 - 08:07 am: And a grand morning it is! I pray all is well with everyone this beautiful morning. By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 - 10:02 pm: I've never seen pictures like those ones. They're very different, and good for you for braving the cold like that. Nice job, Urpo! And I don't blame you for not wanting to play:) A guy could get killed trying to play catch with those!!! By JH (Thumbgardener) on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 - 10:10 pm: Jeremy, that's what I thought. Glazed chocolate donut holes. By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 - 11:40 pm: Thanks for sharing the photos, Urpo. We get an ice ball day once or twice a year here on Lake Michigan near Muskegon, and I have seen them as big as 3 feet in diameter as well. They look sort of comical rolling back and forth in the surf, but you wouldn't want one to roll over your foot. By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, January 5, 2012 - 12:40 am: Looks like one heck of a game of marbles if you ask me.... By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Thursday, January 5, 2012 - 05:06 am: I like what Shirley said, giant rabbits. LOL...LOL... By Peter Ouillette (Peterouillette) on Friday, January 6, 2012 - 01:27 pm: Wow - Lake Superior shows me something new - a beach full of giant Cocoa Puffs. By Barbara Bouwkamp (Barbarab) on Saturday, January 7, 2012 - 09:40 am: I'm with JH - giant glazed chocolate donut holes. |
