By Toivo from Toivola (Toivo) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 06:10 am: It was November 26, 1919 and the Iron Package Freighter, Tioga was making its way from Superior, WI, to Buffalo, New York, hauling a cargo of grain in her freight hold. She was sailing in a blinding snowstorm and nearing the Eagle River Shoals (commonly referred to as "Sawtooth Reef") on the tip of the Keweenaw, she lost her way and ended up stranded on the reef, only to be broken up in the heavy storm. This aerial photo by E. Neil Harri shows us Tioga's final resting place, which is located almost directly off the St. John Society Monastery, as you head north past Eagle River. And, of course, if you have watched the Pasty Cam over most of the last decade, you may recall seeing the pilot house, which doubles as a shed at a home in Eagle River - -
By the way, you can help warm some hearts in Keweenaw County this year, as Sheriff Ron Lahti again is looking out for the kids who otherwise might be left out of the Christmas giving. If you could chip in a few spare shillings for Keweenaw's Toys for Kids, I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated by many people. Give securely online, or contact ksheriff@pasty.net if you have some toys to donate. By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 06:31 am: Hmmmm! Mother Nature showing off again. I can almost feel the bitter cold. By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 07:39 am: Isn't the tioga pilot house a little gift shop in Eagle River now? By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 07:41 am: Wonderful pictures, Neil. Wish I could have been there in Eagle harbor on Thanksgiving! By Cindy, St. Clair Shores, MI (Cindy) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 08:32 am: Wow! Great pictures today. Although very tragic, shipwreck pictures are very interesting. Eagle Harbor has always been my favorite lighthouse, but I have never seen it like the photo today with the November gales churning up the water like that. I enjoyed Neil's gallery very much. The bridge is playing Hide-n-Seek this morning! By Pete Wilberding (Peshtigopete) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 08:51 am: So how much snow in the CC. I hear there was a foot in the Ironwood Hurley area. By Anna Roehrich (Updreamer) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 10:13 am: I took a shot from the same spot when we were there in July, but we certainly didn't have those waves! Gorgeous! By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 01:04 pm: Thank you everyone with your pictures and tales. Sun shines here and will be the last of warmth for about a week for us. Too dry to snow or rain though. The lighthouse picture is great! By JARMO ITÄNIEMI (Japei) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 04:41 pm: Same in here..charmings pictures was E NEIL HARRI Your in album !!! By Greta Armata (Gretania) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 05:43 pm: Just got back to Milwaukee from Ironwood. Yeah, we got about a foot of nice dry stuff Thursday into Friday, easy to shovel. Thanksgiving Day had the wind whipping like crazy. Was a might cold this morning also - 7 below when I got up but it was 3 above when I left at 9 AM. Holy Wah, a warming trend. Snowmobiler's and skiers were quite happy. By Ann Muir (Annm) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 06:12 pm: What an awesome picture of Eagle Harbor! I can just hear the lake roaring. Great photography. By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 09:21 pm: The TIOGA pilothouse used to belong to a friend's grandpa in the 40s or earlier. I think it belongs to Roy Taskila now. He used to live in Laurium. Spent a few nights there in the later 50s, swimming in da big lake late at night and very early in the am. Cold water, but we were young. The pilothouse is a storage shed now, as far as I know. By Frederic W. Koski (Fred) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 09:22 pm: By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 09:49 pm: The two barrel shaped, lighter colored pieces of the Tioga wreckage are the boilers. The square piece with the stack on it is the steam engine laying on its side. That is the stern of the ship. You can also see the torn off rudder lying by itself about 30' to the right of the steam engine. About 3" distant on my computer screen. These facts coutesy of Mark Rowe, a well known scubadiver, from Calumet. |
