By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Friday, July 8, 2011 - 08:21 am:
When Marsha Galbriath and her husband, Gary made a recent stop at the Seney Wildlife Refuge, they were busy checking out the wildlife, like the Osprey in the nest high atop a tree and the beautiful white swan paddling around in the water. What interested me in Marsha's photos today, is the tower in the first shot. I'm wondering if that is an observation tower that is open to the public for viewing of the surrounding Seney landscape? I bet that's quite a view from up there, if it is. By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, July 8, 2011 - 08:23 am: I could spend a day UP in that tower and never see the same thing twice. By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Friday, July 8, 2011 - 08:35 am: While growing up a Yooper there were many "fire towers" across the area. Rangers would sit there 24 hours a day on the lookout for forest fires. In the late '60s I know that as they were being eliminated the state had a small plane that flew up along Lake Huron, along Lake Superior and then back down near the shore of Lake Michigan many times a day.I know this as I flew on one such flight with brother Don when he was editor of the MICHIGAN HISTORY MAGAZINE. (nice job for a LL-H 1951 grad.) By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, July 8, 2011 - 08:46 am: So true about spending the day up there all day. It's like watching a movie over and over again, you always see something you missed the times before. Great pictures. Thanks! By elm (Grampy) on Friday, July 8, 2011 - 08:59 am: You are right about the "fire towers" Eddy. My husband was a Towerman for the state and later became a Forest Fiere Officer. He took me up in a couple of them just to see the view, it was great. He was very sad when they had to be taken down and not left for people to enjoy the view. Too much abuse by some of the public and the liability attatched. Especially the one that used to be on Mt Bohemia. By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, July 8, 2011 - 09:38 am: Thanks for choosing my pics today, Mary! I love Seney! I call it the best bathroom stop in the U.P. When we stop there, we can count on spending awhile, especially walking the outside perimeter of the visitors' center. I'll be doing that Thursday on our way UP to the Aura Jamboree! The fire tower is not for public use (as far as I know). You can friend Seney on Facebook, and then you'll see posts on interesting animal sightings (wolves, moose, etc.) and more. I've finally gotten Gary to register on pastycam, so I'll see if I can get him to tell you what he is doing! By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Friday, July 8, 2011 - 12:46 pm:
The observation tower at Seney is closed to the public due to liability issues. I'm very glad that I had a chance to climb the Seney tower before it was closed, and to climb the Mt. Bohemia tower while it was still standing. The view from Mount Bohemia was magnificent; it occurred to me that from up on top you could probably see more fresh water than anywhere else on earth (except maybe Neil's plane). Glad to see this pastycam pic today -- I'll be seeing the tower for myself in a little over one week! Heading UP to the Curtis area next Saturday and can't wait! By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Friday, July 8, 2011 - 06:13 pm: I think I know what Gary G. is doing. A person is given a square of paper on which a small part of a picture is printed. It is his job to copy it as best he can, with the crayons (or whatever) in front of him. When he has his piece done it will be glued on to the picture to his left where there are blanks. That way everybody get a chance to paint part of a mural. Only a guess! |
