By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Monday, March 22, 2010 - 05:08 am: Brenda Leigh was recently over on the eastern end of the U.P. and snapped some pictures of the St. Mary's River with open water all the way across. Sure isn't much color in the top photo, but the blues of the water, against the white of the shoreline snow and seagulls sure makes a grand shot. Brenda's next photo is where you get to see the color... the mallard duck seems even more brilliant with the subdued whites and blue. This must be a good sign that there's a duck here UP North already. I'm not sure how far south mallard's normally go for the winter months, but seeing this one here, gives me hope that this really is spring already. Looking at the third photo, I love how Brenda captured the seagulls as a number of them were coming in for landing, just hoping to get whatever was there for them to eat. The return of seagulls is a sign of spring in itself. We sure can tell a lot from our feathered friends. Looks like the duck has a band around it's leg too. By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Monday, March 22, 2010 - 06:21 am:
Hi Bill Howard - I ran out to Sunset Bay over the weekend, as part of our walk-through for the planned fiber network for the Keweenaw Peninsula. The snow is just about gone. By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, March 22, 2010 - 08:14 am: By Donald Kilpela (Commodore) on Monday, March 22, 2010 - 09:40 am: I had to chuckle about the vote for the humane society: it asked me identify a goldfish. I wrote "goldfish." Wrong. Too specific I guess. Next I just wrote "fish" and it was accepted. Lesson, don't be to specific in your description. It is very easy to vote and I do it every day and wish everyone else would as well. By Joy Brewer (Joy) on Monday, March 22, 2010 - 10:31 am: Great photos, Brenda! I just came back from a very quick trip home to the UP; I saw a few eagles (at least that is what we thought they were), but no seagulls on the Lake Michigan side. Not much snow on the southern part of the UP neither. While I was there early Saturday morning, it was a very, very light dust of snow coming down. The sun came up and no snow. Spring has come to Dickinson County! By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, March 22, 2010 - 01:59 pm: It's amazing between water and bird migration what shows up in one's proerty! 5 acres of our 20 is under water again this year due to river flooding. But it's been pretty neat having Ducks, Seagulls Canadian Geese, Snow Geese, Bald and Golden Eagles and various Hawks taking pit stops down there! By Therese (Therese) on Monday, March 22, 2010 - 02:58 pm: I am seeing very small bright white diving duck-like birds in the waters here on Little Traverse Bay. Looks like they are migrating through. Anyone know what they might be? They are too far out to see clearly but are about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the grey ducks floating with them. By Walter P McNew (Waltermcnew) on Monday, March 22, 2010 - 03:30 pm: thanks for the nice pictures brenda i have always enjoyed your singing i remain walter p. love the rocks By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Monday, March 22, 2010 - 03:46 pm: Looks like some signs of Spring. Therese, This site works well for me, you just type in what you do know about a bird and tell it to search and it will at least narrow the choices down. By Musicteacher (Musicteacher) on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 - 11:29 am: |
