Good Morning, Everyone! You know that Spring is springing, when you keep hearing a loud noise outside, something sounds like it is attacking the downspout. Even before you look, you know it is probably a bird building its nest. It is so loud that I figured it had to be a big bird, like a blue jay, a crow, or something. I had told my husband that if it was one of those, to please scare it away before it laid its egg, so it had time to build a nest somewhere else. But, it is a robin! And, I love robins, the harbingers of spring, so they can stay there, even if they have startled me a lot in the last several days. They are really hard workers, off and on from early morning to late in the evening. I hope their nest is done, soon, though! :-) By Eugene Zuverink (Zube) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 08:13 am: One of the radio stations in the Grand Rapids Mi. area said that the Keweenaw still has 22 inches of snow on the ground, anyone UP there,is that true? That was this mornings report. By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 08:14 am:
Good morning! I hope everybody has a fine day. The sun is shining and it's supposed to be in the 70's today. By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 08:15 am:
Good morning!! By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 08:27 am: Thanks for that info, Capt. Paul, I think that explains why I woke up about that time. I didn't consciously feel anything but was a bit dizzy when I turned over in bed. Eerie! By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 09:48 am: Spring IS in the air; three deer just swam across the Lac La Belle channel, shook off, and continued sprinting up the beach. By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 10:01 am: Spring is in the air here in Eastern Ia. as well. Skunks are not making it across the roadways alive and a local radio station is playing the 1973 classic, "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road" daily. By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 10:28 am: I have noticed many dead skunks here in the Copper Country too. Much more pleasant sign of spring were some bulbs coming through in a neighbors flower bead I noticed walking yesterday. My son was more interested in the emerging piles of dog poop, which I would classify with the skunks. By Doug (Greenhermit) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 10:48 am: The photograph entitled "Big Iron River (1926)" in today's Decade was taken at what used to be the Greenwood Lumber Company's Camp 6. The people in the photo are standing on rocks hidden under the rushing water of Greenwood Falls in today's Cam Notes. In 1931 C. H. Worcester, president of the Greenwood Lumber Co., donated Camp 6 to Carp Lake Township and it was used as a scoutng and Bible camp into the 40's. The picture was probably taken at some activity during this time - not in 1926 when the logging camp was still in operation. In the 1950's the township dump was located adjacent to the falls and provided tourists and locals alike with bear watching opportunities. Several silver mines were openned up along the Iron River in this vicinity during the 1870's. By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 12:05 pm:
I just heard on the news that there is a big oil leak on a ship in Marquette, and that the lower harbor is now closed, for protection & cleanup? By Theresa R. Brunk (Trb0013) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 12:57 pm: That song was 'Dead Brunk in the Middle of the Road' or am I not hearing the song right? :P By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 01:52 pm:
Here's Art Pickering's report on the incident in Marquette harbor, as reported on boatnerd.com: By The (Zman) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 02:41 pm:
Here's what Channel 6 news says about the spill By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 03:21 pm:
Thank you for the update, Dunerat & Zman! The WLUCTV6 report is updated from what I last saw. I would guess that it would be easier if the leak was in a tug than if it were from an ore carrier. I really hope the winds stay low, so the leak doesn't spread and that it can be contained and cleaned up quickly. I will be interested in hearing updates. By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 03:37 pm: Me confused. Last week we heard this: Now WLUC-TV6 says: Huh? (I have no reason to doubt what RCW said, but this sure is some contradictory information. By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 03:39 pm: Oh no Theresa, that was a nic-name for you huh? Well, I had one too, my maiden name was Johnson, so I was called Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder. If it was only true, I would not have to work for income! By RCW (Rcw) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 03:55 pm: FR Nash We have no tug boat service (ASSISTING LARGE STEAMERS ETC) in the Houghton area either, but numerous one's do venture thru. I suppose thats the case in MQT By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 06:04 pm: Zube: I would say that 22 inches in the wooded areas is accurate. By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 06:09 pm: Spill update: it was a tugboat that hit bottom and spilled about 30 gallons; they are making mountains out of molehills. FRNash By Eugene Zuverink (Zube) on Monday, April 21, 2008 - 08:06 pm: Thanks alot Dave, It will be in the woods until June if thats the case. By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 - 08:50 am: Daveofmohawk - thanks for the update. That sounds about par for the course, that they would make mountains out of a molehill on something like that. I am curious, though, as to why they tug would hit the bottom, when the lake levels are up? Did it hit a previously buried or uncharted boulder, or how could the tug hit bottom (but not the freighter)? Thank you for your info!
