I always feel like I've woken up in the Smithsonian Institute of the U.P. whenever I have a chance to browse through the Pasty Central Guest Gallery. Steve Weis had these winter shots of Point Iroquois Lighthouse, a Lake Superior landmark we stumbled upon a few summers ago here on the Pasty Cam. And he even brought the sign home in his camera case.

Good morning Charlie or should I say Goodnight?

_Season's Revenge_ by Henry Kisor, which is set in Ontonagon, talks about how the Sioux used to be in the UP until they were out driven out by the Ojibway around 1600. The sign above talks about the Ojibway repelling the Iroquois. Everyone wants to live in the UP!

So, exactly how far is this from Sault Ste. Marie? Wish I'd have gone there last year when I was in the Soo. Great pictures, and very interesting.

In 1963 My Father was Commander of the Coast Guard Base in Sault Ste Marie. On one of a series of nights when the Corp of Engineers were complaining to him that ships were showing up at the locks unannounced to traverse thru, my Father was having a heated conversation with the current seaman on duty who had more than once fallen asleep, on duty, in the light house and didn't 'spot' the ship coming and relay the ships' name to the Corp. My Father blurted out 'why for 2 bits I would replace you with a camera!!'. A light went off in his head and he did indeed install camera's in every lighthouse in his jurisdiction at that time. The use of camera's on the seaway continued to grow until every lighthouse manned by the Coast Guard had installed camera's all the way to the Atlantic via the St. Lawrence seaway.

Great family story, Theresa. Must save that for your family history. That and other experiences must not be lost in time. I really liked visiting that particular lighthouse altho you couldn't go into the occupied house itself. The Soo area is one of my favorite areas of the UP. Also like Paraside and Grand Maris. And of course this is Steve Hamilton's scenes for his detective books.

My wife and I have been to this lighthouse several times and also climbed the tower. Great place to visit and look forward to coming back.

I love pictures of lighthouses on the Great Lakes, where ever they are! This is one lighthouse that I have not seen before. Thank you for the wonderful pictures, Steve and Charlie, and for showing where it is, so that I can add it to my list to visit. Thank you, Charlie, for picking it for today, along with all of the information on it. And, thank you, Theresa B, for the great story on the cameras in lighthouses that began near the Sault!

There's a program coming to our local libraries soon about the women of the lighthouses, apparently women lighthouse keepers. It's March 1 at the Clio library and some other date at a Fenton library. I plan to go to the Clio one.

Well here is another one, concerning the Lighthouses of Whitefish Bay.
Again, as a young child I truly didn't understand the ramifications of my Fathers position in the Coast Guard, and what I took as routine outings were in fact gifts in time and youth.
Before the Lighthouse at Whitefish Bay in Paradise was closed, daily attended visits were already a thing of the past. It was fenced off, Posted, "US Government Personnel only", padlocked and overgrown with scrub blueberries.
On one Sunday we took a family car filled with as many of us that were still living at home, and toured the grounds and picked blueberries and the beautiful wet glacier-rounded rocks and picnicked. I dreamed of once an adult, I would return and buy the lighthouse, somehow, and turn into my own home. I remember the blue berries were very small in size but very sour and to my liking. But as things go, years later, it reopened as a tourist attraction.
I traveled to visit the Falls at Tahquamenon on one of my vacations and decided on a whim to see the Lighthouse and was shocked to find it looked nothing like what I remembered. The Chain fence and lock was gone the 'closeness' was gone, too. It was on open area, the Lighthouse tremendous in size, and buildings had been built, other buildings replaced.
It was on Epiphany of sorts finding that 'indeed one can never go home' I am so glad that others now can see the mouth of Lake Superior, as my small eyes did, and hopefully they too, will fall in love with the view.
