Good morning everybody! Got to sleep in a little today because I don't have to work right away this morning. I think it might rain here again today. Where was all of this moisture in July when we really needed it? Have a great day everybody.

Good morning, sky is starting to break up. The blue is starting to show through the clouds. Berkley's LaSalette festival is now history and I didn't win the big raffle for the fortieth time in a row. Precious won a small raffle that included this great washtub that will be perfect for the next party to keep pop and beer in. Andrea the Irish dancer is getting ready for her next Feish in Chicago next month and her sprained ankle has heeled, she is enjoying her first year in high school telling me all about it this morning. Bill the next door neighbor just left for work in his 1967 Porshe rattling the windows in my office when he backed up. Kind of took me by surprise when he passed under the window. I am kind of jealous of his auto but don't have the room in the garage for any thing more.

Sounds like you have lots going on Mikie! Glad that Andrea's ankle is doing better.

What is different today?

Therese. Would you mind keeping me informed as to how the color in the Harbor Springs/Petoskey area is? Every fall our neighbors and us take a 2 or 3 day trip up to Clare, then 10 and 115 to Frankfort, Traverse City, Kalkaska, East Jordon, Petoskey, Wolverine and Harbor Springs area. We generally run the road between Petoskey and Wolverine with the sun at our back so that we see the woods with the sun at its brightest. We try to eat lunch at the Pier in Harbor Springs. We generally Stay at the Best Western that is close to the airport at Harbor Springs and eat brunch or dinner at the golf course north of there, over looking Little Traverse Bay. A beautiful sight, weather cooperating. 119 and Cross Village are generally included in our sight seeing. The salmon fishing at the Petoskey Marina dam is another stop on our tour. There always seems to be a •••••• or two on that route also! We live about 25 miles east of Lansing. Thank you! Evidently, cas-ino is a bad word!

If anyone is interested, I went to the tressels yesterday (off of M-38) and the colors are at full peak. After that, I took off to the Porkies to view the Lake of the Clouds and the colors. Full peak there as well. Beautiful sights despite the drought that we have had.

Paulwebbtroll, you have a fantastic trip outlined. As I was reading your itinerary, a place would pop into my mind to suggest that you add, only to read a bit further, and find that you had already included it. That would be an awesome trip, assuming the weather cooperates, and it is timed right for the color season. Have a great trip!

I took the best photos of fall color that we have taken since we have lived in Michigan at the Indian River State Park a few years back. That state park is not far from the Petoskey State Park.

Blue Monday? The Secretary of State's Office is putting out the word, "Expect the best, prepare for the worst," as far as possible closures due to lack of a state budget. This particularly pertains to driver's licenses, license plates & tabs, hunting & fishing licenses, state parks & welcome centers, etc.

My youngest son went to the Secretary of State's Office yesterday after school with dad to get his Level 1 driver's license. He had just finished his driver's ed class on Tuesday night, so yesterday was his first chance to get it. The normal wait in Midland is no more than about 10 minutes, but he had to wait over an hour and a half yesterday, at least in part because they have been warning people all week to renew their driver's licenses and license tabs early because of a potential shutdown of state "non-essential services".

Thanks for the info, Lauri! We'll be UP in one week, Thursday through Monday. We usually spend one day on our fall trip going to the Porkies, so I hope the color is still close to peak then. We also spend a day in the Keweenaw. We'll go up that peninsula either by shoreline or Brockways, and back by Bete Gris/Lac LaBelle. I don't know where we'll spend the third day, maybe Silver River Falls north of L'anse, Pte. Abbaye, and other spots on our peninsula. The Pinery Indian cemetary, pictured here a bit ago, is beautiful in the fall. So is my cottage, with the wind rustling the birches, the crunch of leaves underfoot there, and the waves crashing! It's my favorite trip UP of the year.

Hunting licences too! with bow season only 3 more days, the guys I work with may be in tears.

Probably a lot of those bow hunters got the big hunting license package last spring! The DNR guys won't be working either, so we won't need licenses! I wouldn't try that!

I just mailed in my DL and Plate renewal that expires the end of Oct. What a mess it would be, but I dont believe the State would shut down.
I wonder if the gambling establishments are considered essential ?

Mikie, our neighbors recently took possession of a Porsche (two syllables, I've been educated) Cayenne. You are right, the Porsche has a sound of its' own; however, I preferred their Hummer, which we could take out into the fields to pick up rocks.

Hey Flip Flop, You can't shut down the •••••••! All the plants will die!!! Oh, I forgot, cas-ino comes up red if you don't insert a hyphen.

Actually, what I've read is that technically, the gamb-ling places would shut down, the packaged liquor, which would eventually shut down liquor sales, because stores could not re-stock, lottery tickets, and yes, the whole Secretary of State's office would go down, plus the hunting/fishing/DNR/state parks, et al.

Let's just hope they can make a deal tonight, with both houses of the legislature & the governor. :-)

This may be naive, but all those things that are "non essential" actually create revenue for the state. So what rocket scientist thought it would be a good idea to shut it down?

The same brilliant people who refuse to pass an interim budget and the same brilliant person who refuses to sign an interim budget for 30 days so they can actually work out details in a reasonable way, so that dumb mistakes are not made in an annual budget because they are running with a gun to their head, so to speak.

Yuck- a clown. I don't like clowns. Never have, never will. Or dolls with eyes that watch you and have teeth. Or those dummies that ventriloquests(sp) have. Nope not me.

Ok, the Governor just announced that she has set the wheels in motion for a shutdown Sunday night, if the lawmakers in both houses do not pass a budget balanced her way. She will not sign a 30-day extension. And, the shutdowns will be as I outlined above if her budget is not passed.

The legislature is to meet again tonight. She is giving them until Sunday night, so time marches on. Hopefully they will come up with some sort of compromise in the meantime!

k j, That's funny. I was going to comment this morning about the clown. My son is SOOOO afraid of clowns that it's ridiculous. He can't even stand them at parades. By the way, he's 31. He says it happened when he watched Stephen Spielberg's "IT". My hubby keeps saying that he's going to dress up like a clown on Halloween and go to his house.

LOL about the dolls with eyes too.

You guys! When my oldest son was little (2 years old), I made a clown costume, the old-fashioned way, with set-in zipper, hand-appliqued patches, hat, pom-pons, hand finished hems, et al, for him. With all of that work in it, yes, I made it plenty big, with hand-basted psuedo-hems in the arms and legs, so there was plenty of room to grow. He wore that costume for a good 3 years, when he outgrew it, and I made him a scarecrow costume, same deal. Well, all three sons wore both costumes for many, many years. Oh, and I then made a costume that is a slice of pizza, this time with lots of appliqued pepperoni and mushrooms on it, and machine quilted. That costume all three sons & my husband have worn for many years.

Anyway, my guys have never been afraid of clowns. Maybe it is the way it is presented or something? Strange...It is true that this clown costume was a happy clown, not a scary one, maybe that's the difference?

I have ballons,and they float!

Last year Tim my grandson wanted to be a garbage can for Halloween. Dani brought a garbage can over and I cut the bottom out of it, he became the best dressed garbage can in Berkley. Andrea the Irish dancer wanted to be a flower one time and Dani thought that she wanted to be a flower girl so she fixed up a flower girl dress along with the bunch of fake flowers she cried no I want to be a flower, so Dani went to work and made a flower costume for her.

I once had one of those balloons Dave. It got away from me, yours isn't red is it?

No fear of clowns here. When I was six years old I broke my arm ice skating. I ended up in traction in the hospital's children's ward, a pretty scary experience. But the next day, a Sunday afternoon, Bubblenose the Clown came to see me and entertained the kids in the ward. I was the envy of the ward, having a clown as my personal friend. When I asked him how he knew I was in the hospital he told me a little birdie had told him. I was six; I believed him. It was a couple of years yet before I figured out that Bubblenose the Clown and George Williams, a member of our church, were one and the same.

That's awesome, Mikie! The homemade ones that are unique are so cool, and they don't have to worry about seeing half a dozen of the same costumes walking down the street. I love the garbage can & flower ideas!
