Hello?

What you early risers don't understand is that occaisionally the good people who run this site like to have late risers like myself be the first post. It looks like rain here in Beuautiful Berkeley, but the roofers are still working. Now they are just above my head. Slept like a baby lasst night cool and comfortable. Got my seven hours sleep. So what is the topic of discussion this weekend going to be? I have to prepare my mind and get into the right mind set. Being a senior I am not as quick as some of you younger people.

Hey Mikie, Mr. Deb here, don't know what this weekends topic should be but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be wife bashing. Remember we have to sleep sometime and anything we do wrong is committed to the forever remembered file.

Believe me Mikie, some of us younger people aren't the quickest either, especially when the alarm goes off at 5:30, scares the %$#@ out of the cat, which then lands on your head, which in turn scares the &%$#@ out of you!! But, knowing that the weekend is here I can survive a half-day of work.....

Good morning everyone. Happy start of the weekend day :)

Mikie, about those roofers, we had our roof redone when we first moved here...and my teenage daughter kept forgetting that we had a skylight in the one bathroom. The roofers were up on the roof, and my daughter got out of bed and decided to take a shower. Hubby told daughter, "If I were you, I wouldn't use the upstairs bathroom...the roofers are up on the roof." You know how men don't explain things, eh. He could have made himself a little clearer and said, "the roofers are up on the roof, and if you use that bathroom, they are going to see you in your birthday suit through the skylight." Nope..he's a man.

My hubby went outside..and my daughter who did not make the connection between the roofers on the roof and the skylight in the bathroom, went ahead and took her shower in the upstairs bathroom.

When my daughter emerged from the shower...she stil had not made the connection. So hubby told her, "I was outside in the yard, and I noticed that all the roofers who had been on the other side of the roof, went running over to the other side of the of the roof by the skylight for the bathroom...so I figured you didn't listen to me, and had taken your shower upstairs."

Of course the roofers hadn't done that..but hubby had daughter convinced that her shower had been witnessed by all these roofers through the skylight. He is so mean sometimes, I swear.

Topic of conversation for this weekend: sister in laws. I will offer up my own sister in law for this topic :) She has been Michigan bashing all week long...and about how 'back woods' we Michiganners are...and how we don't talk 'right'.

You know, I have taken in stride the family jokes about living in Michigan. Such as "How does Renee' know she's lost? Answer: When her tires are no longer on a dirt road." Or, "Did you hear about the time Renee' and Jim were driving down the road and Renee' asked Jim 'what's that sound the tires are making...and Jim had to explain to her that's the normal sound of tires on real pavement." Or, "Renee' had to measure the height of the garage before she bought her truck, to make sure it would fit in the garage."

Those jokes I can deal with...probably because they are true. But my one sister in law is well, rather mean...and when I am talking she will have me repeat things, "because I can't understand the way you Michigan people talk".

The last straw was this week...when my sister in law emailed to everyone in the family...including me, a list of over 100 'backwood Michigan' jokes...which were rather crude.

I say this makes sister in laws, open season :)

On the phone with hubby...he says I am the one who started it with his sister.

Me: How so?
Hubby: Remember the time first time my sister came to visit when we moved to Indiana?
Me: Oh yeah, when she asked me 'so how does it feel to live in a town where you don't have to share the road with a John Deere'?
Hubby: Uggggggggggggggggggh!
Me: And I told her, 'darlin, I'm still trying to get used to flush toilets and not having to pump my water from the well..this thing they call a garbage disposal...and not having to worry about making sure I don't plant anything in the septic field'.
Hubby: See what I mean?
Me: Ok, then do you remember the time she asked me, 'so what classes did you take in school, corn growing 101?' Now that was mean.
Hubby: Okay, you do have a point.
Me: And her joke as to why I get lost in Chicago...because I tell direction by the position of the sun and the tall buildings in Chicago block the sun. That was mean too.
Hubby: Yeah, but do you remember your reply to her?
Me: Hey, I was just being honest when I told her that if she was in the car with me, I would always be lost because the size of her butt always blocked out the sun. Cuz that's what we call a full moon in Michigan.
Hubby: Don't forget the time you told her that if she wanted to avoid the toll on the Mackinac Bridge to go over it in a Yugo.
Me: You gotta admit that was a good one, eh.
Hubby: Yeah, that was good. Along with when she asked what was for dinner, and you said, 'I'll have to wait and see what road kill Jim brings home today'.
Hubby: Okay, you made your point.
Me: Of course I did...I'm a Michigan woman...we always make our point.
Hubby: So what was all in that list of jokes?
Me: About the only one I can mention on the phone is the one about how do you know you're from Michigan? The last time you saw your daddy, he was doing yard work, chained to three other prisoners.
Hubby: Uh oh...that isn't good.
Me: Now do you understand where I'm coming from?

Hey Sur5er, I feel your pain!! I am having a field day here in Texas because no one has a clue what I am telling them. I have had soooooooo many people tell me "What country are you from, you sure do talk funny", or "Are you from Canada"?? My usual answer is maybe so, but you won't catch me saying 'yaunto' or 'aaaight' anytime soon ;-)

My only problem is I have no brothers or sisters, or even a sister-in-law. I have a brother-in-law, but he speaks 6 different languages. Besides, is being "backwoods" really such a bad thing to be???

Capt. Paul, you want some of mine? Between brothers and their spouses I'm sure I could spare a couple.

6 different languages? Wow, I've got two down and am working on a third. I speak American (some would say poorly), Minnesotan and am working on da UP. I grew up about 200 miles south of the accent border but still trying to get Deb to move that way. My heart is in the UP but the rest of me is stuck here.

I'll take 'backwoods' to 'city slicker' any day. Three more years or so and the biggest city I'm going to see is Marquette.

Dr. Nat's brother is a US Diplomat, so it's kinda his job to know that many languages. Right now he is finishing up in Switzerland, he comes to the US for 2 months in July then to his new post in Senegal. We're hoping to see him in Senegal next summer; it will knockout one more continent for me.....

How can somebody thats lived their whole life south of Detroit have a Yooper accent??? :)

When I moved to Royal Oak, the kids made fun of my yoopereeze. I then developed the habit of talking in a monotone. Trying to remove any accent from my speech. When I started high school there was a teacher, Miss. Miller, from the UP and she encoraged me to return to my roots. I now have the ability to speak fluent Detroit, UP, but while living in Germany learned German from my friend Manfred Griener, years later when the company was taken over by Germans one of them asked me why I spoke with a lisp in German and not in English, seems that Manfred lisped and I did not know it.

If the topic is SIL's this weekend I will have to try and tune in. I have six. Lets say they can hardly figure out what to make of a Yooper (I refuse to be called ex-Yooper, once a Yooper always a Yooper) who thinks the world of llamas.

Capt Paul......Your brother-in-law probably speaks the three languages of Switzerland......German, French and Italian. I have family in Switzerland, a cousin Heidi (naturally) near Basel, in the German speaking region...... I speak a little German but most young Swiss speak English so no problem there..... I just returned from Italy and didn't have a problem because most people speak some English. Lucky for us.....

I have to start the meat loafs for the homeless now. I think these christian ladies are kind of mean in serving meat loaf to the homeless, but I am not brave enough to argue with them.

Is it possible to be a Yooper by marriage?

On the topic of accents, when I moved to the Detroit area in 1966 with a very heavy Yooper accent, the kids in school thought I was from England!!! LOL Now after being in the big city for 40 years, I've lost most of the accent, but when I get nort of da bridge, that accent returns in a matter of minutes!!

Sur5er, I have many relatives in Indiana around Columbus who love to hear me speak in the native language of their forefather. Their kids just sit there and listen to what I have to say. People in Indiana should not throw rocks if you know what I mean, and the way they drive, scares the h--- ot of me. I had to service a plant down by Muncie and always took either a truck or a van that would provide some kind of protection for me. My one sil is great, the other two leave something to be desired.

Being a Yooper is like a religion, some are born into it, but often the most religisious are the converts. So yes I think you can become a Yooper with the right training and being baptized in the waters of the Superior lake. Also learning to love pasties, cinimon roles, and being able to tolerate huge bugs.

Mikeie, Don't forget swampers, choppers, and 30 feet of snow.

I must be getting close to almost official Yooperdom, I've been dunked in The Lake and not only do I love pasties and cinnamon rolls, I was a baker for 15 years so I can also make them. The pasty recipe is Debs so it genuine Yooper.

Oh Yeah Kenty, I have swampers and choppers but the 30 feet of snow we don't get. We get the International falls express temeratures, sunshine and -30.

Add on Spanish, Afar (his wife is Afar from Djibouti), and some Arabic MaryLou. When it comes to languages, he is truly gifted.

I just heard someone in the office say "We all going to fer food, yaunto"?? And they say "I" talk funny........

A pre-lunch conversation:

"Jeet"?

"No, Ju"?

"Nope, squeet."

We had a group of roofers putting up a roof on a home near ours. Actually,it was just across the street.One roofer was a standout..he was handsome and had a build that every other male would envy.He was also moonlighting at night as a male strip dancer so,while working,he wore an almost not there ---well,I don't know what you would call it,front cup with a T strap. I heard he wanted to keep his overall tan ..and he certainly did. Kept the neighbors captivated,too.

Hubby and his siblings grew up in Chicago...so by his sister's standards, I am backwoods. Nothing wrong with that, because I love having lived in the country and small towns...and I wouldn't trade it for living in a big city ;)

Accent: I blame this entirely on my southern belle best friend and my Swedish neighbor...well you get the picture. Heck, everyone in Michigan and around me understood me perfectly, until that step sister of mine walked into the picture.
But in all honesty, Michiganners do pronounce words differently, with emphasis on different sylables...but still, she doesn't have to make such a big deal about it, eh ;)

Erica, What's the name of that roofer? I think I need my house re-roofed. All us ladies can float around in my pool, drinking strawberry daiquiris and making cat calls, as watch him re-roof my house.

If there is no one to object, I play a Jesuit Priest on some reenactments, I would like to announce that Mr. Deb should be considered for membership in the Grand Order of Yooperism. If after three postings and if no one objects then he can clearly state he is a Yooper. of course you realize Mr. Deb you need to have Yooper parents, similar to godparents, to attest to the fact that you are ready for this great honor.

Erica, I just noticed a gathering of ladies in the front of my house, they are looking at young Zack, twenty five and muscle bound. The other two look like me so I think they are wathing Zack. I noticed he has his shirt off and the other two are fully dressed. He also is up there making these Swhartzneger poses.

It just dawned on me why Precious and her friends were in the side yard all day drinking Merlot.

Cindi, just came in and asked if I had any singles. What is with that?

I noticed you had mentioned you had a teacher at Dondero named Miss Miller. I had her when I went to Dondero and also there was a Mrs. Miller who was Finnish. She was a tough teacher but you sure learned in her class. This weekend they're having Open House at Dondero for alumni since its going to be turning into a middle school. At least they're not tearing it down and building condos!

Sur5er You better hurry as they are starting to pick up but will be back on Monday. Precious can't afford to miss so much work. Her gang is into Merlot, to sophisticated for daquriris. By the way people in the Warren/ Berkley area there are Michigan berries at Kutchey's fruit stand on ten mile between Dequindere and Ryan at $2.75 per quart, really are excelent. Bought two quarts and have gone through one already.

My oldest brother's wife is from the Chicago area. My family grew up on a farm in northern Michigan. She thought we pronounced Chicago funny. We thought she pronounced it funny. Any way she has lived in Michigan now for many years. I really like her even thought she doesn't know how to pronounce her own hometown.

Mr. Deb, You will have to present proof that they are from the UP, like have your wife tell us. I think that a proper babtism in the Lake is called for here also. Being dipped three times with Polka music playing, and then adjouring to a proper establishment to celebrate the joyus event. There should be plenty of Bosh beer or a substitute and daquiris flowing from a fountain. The meal should consist of pasties, ham, and those little weiners in bbq sause. Maybe someone could make some jello rings also. Anyone else have any suggestions for the banquet? I am kind of tired of meatloaf right now.

sdc, tonight there is something going on, but I have to feed the homeless at LaSalette in Berkley. Tomorrow night is my nephews wedding and I am being forced to go.

Mikie, you forgot a hotdish/casserole made out of macaroni and anything else in the fridge or cupboards.

Deb, I have gotten used to Omaha Steak hot dogs and I never have had a hot dog cassarole. I would be willing to try one though.

Cudighi is a mild or spicy Italian sausage either made into patties or links. Very good cooked on the grill with mozzarella cheese. The locals like pizza sauce on it too.

OK I have dusted off my prietly garb and wonder when the ceremony will take place.Don't forget we have to post his application to become a Yooper three times so it will be legal this can serve as the first posting. Don't forget the desserts, one of the best desserts that I have become used to is Sanders Bumpy cake, it is one of the reasons that I am a diabetic. We also have to come up with a name for him to use. Something elegant, like Speedy, or Bun, or maybe Scooter.

Touque, I think, and yes I do. In blaze orange no less. We hunt deer here too. Not everyone has a hat like that, only the smart ones.

I took Precious hunting back in the sixties. she asked what she should wear, I told her it would be cold so wear whatever you have that is warmest. Her mother had just got a new mink, and given the old one to Precious. Yup that is what she decided to wear. By the time we got to the cottage she told me what she brought. I took her into Gladwin and bought her an orange jump suit and an orange watch cap. when she told her family what she had brought to wear they thought that I had told her to wear the mink, to this day the mil thinks that I was trying to get Precious killed. I should have taken the mil out with the mink on.

I could'nt do that to the mil, maybe the ex wife. Great story though Mikie.

The mink would have to be something like woodchuck though!

My family says I do have a little drawl tho.I have only been here for almost 45 yrs:(

mil has just called and said she will forgive me for the comment I made about her if I make her some brownies and take her and Precious out to breakfast on Sunday. She wants to go to Omara's restraunt here in Berkley for the brunch. Notice how she will read what I say but wont post anything since she is afraid people will agree with me. She dropped off a bag of my favorite candy knowing that I am a diabetic, she is trying to get me up to 200 on the meter again. She is mad that I spent Friday making meat loaf, and not garage shopping with her. She sent over six pies for the homeless and doesn't belong to the church, also gave Precious $100 for the dinner. Guess she isn't all bad. Big mistake on my part by showing her how to use the computer that we gave her.

Hey guys, Sometimes I think Mr. Deb is more Yooper than I am. NAHHHH!!!!! Just kidding. Now that he's finally got that darn pool in working order it's about 56 degrees out there. Wouldn't you just know it? It looks as if he's spent his day off prosperously anyway. At least he is a real Yooper now. Well, almost. I can attest to the fact that his mother and father in law are Yooper. Born and raised in the Copper Country and refuse to leave. They'd have to be carried out. And he's been dunked in THE LAKE more than once I might add. One day we were in the darn thing for over 2 hours. He's a Yooper alright. Every darn day he's up at the crack of who knows what time to go and pick thimbleberries to make jam. Won't pay the monks for it, that's for sure. He can't leave those bushes because he's afraid somebody else might get some. I mean, geez. Anyway, it's fine with me if he becomes a Yoooper. He keeps working away at me to move back UP there. Maybe some day but not now.

Hey Sur5er, Are you supplying the daiquiris when we come and watch the roofers? Sounds good to me. They don't have to wear anything as far as I'm concerned. Then we can point and laugh our you know what's off. Our roofers are south of the border too. I don't mean south of the bridge either. I mean south of the Rio Grande. Okay, have to go to a friend's for pizza now. We'll be back.

Just thought I'd tell you guys that the flamingos are freezing their butts off. If they'd let us, we could help them find a warmer nest but they're afraid we'd hurt their babies. So, here's hoping they survive the deep freeze. (Plastic shatters in the cold you know.)

We had poutine in Ontario once. I'd call it heart attack on a plate. It's French fries with gravy on top and cheese. At least that's how it was when we had it. It was good, but not something I'd have on a regular basis.

When is the induction? Look at everything I
missed while I wasn't online. And sadly, I
don't have time to weigh in on everything. All
the cleaning I didn't do the past two weeks
when a) my son was home and b) I was
writing report cards is now calling to me.

How about swampers? Shouldn't Mr. Deb
have swampers to go with his lumberjack
shirt and toque? How's his accent? Will it
require work before the ceremony? What kind
of music will they play at the party afterwards.
Better put in a call to Kenjamimi's group or,
better yet, after inviting them, how about
holding the induction at the Aura Jamboree?
And yes, Marsha, we'll get a bean pot that's big
