Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 - 06:22 am:

In that first month of the Pasty Cam back in 1998, my son Jonathan was on a mission to photograph the essential landmarks of the Keweenaw. The Lift Bridge, Quincy Mine, Lindells's, Laurium Manor Inn... and of course the distinctive 'hump' of the Cliffs on your way up US-41. Like the vision of a distant peak in the Canadian Rockies, it rises above the surrounding forest. But unlike the Rockies - which seem to take hours to reach - you're at the Cliffs in 5 minutes.

I'll always remember those early days of this project. Generally I would post the picture late in the day, usually one which Jonathan had taken earlier in the morning or afternoon - with our primative Mavica - as he traveled through the Copper Country, back and forth to Michigan Tech. Every one of those original scenes have since been re-photographed hundreds of times with cameras which are light-years advanced in features, by amateurs and professionals alike. One repeat of the scene which appeared on March 28, 1998, also appears this month in the 2006 Pasty Cam Color Calendar. It is one of my favorites by David Antikainen, which we have enjoyed every day this month, each time we look at our refrigerator.

Somewhere along the line, the Pasty Cam truly took on a life of its own - going beyond a father and son hobby - with the help of hundreds of website visitors who jumped on board to become a part of this 'daily glimpse of life in the U.P.'

Looks like US 41 heading into Ahmeek. What a shot. Brings me back.

Sur5er, You're the early bird!!!

Does anyone know if that mountain has a name? Mts. Bohemia and Houghton are all labeled on the maps, but not this one.

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 - 08:09 am:

We will be in St. Ignace for a week in August. Is there anywhere that you can buy a pick up truck load of firewood? All we have found is those little bundles they sell at gas stations or Glen's that burn quick and are pretty pricey. Thanks in advance for any info!

By Donald R. Elzinga (Donagain) on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 - 08:48 am:

Pennie - Whatever you do, don't buy wood in Lower Michigan and try to bring it accross the bridge. Because of the emerald ash borer they wont allow it.

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 - 09:13 am:

Thanks Donald, that I already knew. That is why I am looking for something that is on the St.Ignace side or in the area. Hopefully people will remember that they are not supposed to be bringing wood over the bridge. :)

On the subject of wood..beware of buying cheap mulch this year, I have been informed by a garden center I buy from, that the trees that were damaged or cut up from Katrina are being processed into mulch and it is termite infected. It is being sold very inexpensive.

The termite in mulch story isn't true. See Snopes.com for 25 hottest urban legends.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 - 11:11 am:

Thanks Bob J. for that site, I like to use mulch due to our sandy soil and hot summers we have, keeps some moisture for my gardens for a while longer.

Good Morning, well the son and family have moved into their new home. Still haven't taken the cats with them. going to be lonely here without the granddaughter around.Precious cried most of the night missing the kids, I am looking forward to peace and quiet. Pennie, I have bought wood from a lumber mill north of Ste. Ignace, I will try to remember the name of the town. There were several lumber mills in the area.

I had that color photo as my screen saver for months, last year..I love it :)
Usedtobeayooper: I was just getting ready to head to bed, after pulling yet another all nighter with this paperwork...when I thought I would check Pasty Cam to see if I could get the Early Bird :) What a pleasant surprise for me...especially since I am in the last stretch of this paperwork.
Mikie, I know exactly how you and Precious feel about the empty nest syndrome...as if going through it once isn't bad enough, eh. I was lost for weeks, when my daughter and her fiance moved to Florida...and now excited that they are back home..but not really looking forward to when they find a home, and will leave the nest once again.

Thanks Michael! Please let me know! I appreciate it.:)

Japei,

Thanks for the link to Oulu. My mother's
people came from there. I visited there ...oh
my, nearly 40 years ago with my parents.
Haven't been back to Finland since.

Kiitos.

Sur5er--Keep on trucking! Oh maybe you don't
use that expression in your family...soon you'll
be done your paper work. Bravo!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 - 06:20 pm:

Kosk, Thank you :) If I squint really hard...and turn my head a certain way, I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, on this case ;)

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 - 07:23 pm:

Charlie and Edie here at the MTU Archives, NOT listening to the presentation by the Hallers. Why? Because several hundred people who arrived on time were turned away, as the room could only accommodate about 150. Unbelievable interest in the subject, the Atlas Powder Company at Senter.

These are nice public terminals here in the J. R. Van Pelt Library. I have not been here since the recent remodeling was completed.

We'll have to see if Pasty.NET members Bill and Eloise would be willing to give an encore presentation at the Calumet Theatre.
