Jumping into an aircraft and flying over the countryside, is as close as us humanoids will ever get to having wings. I envy folks like E. Neil Harri, who have the know-how and ability to do just that, since it's such a great way to view our surroundings and spot things you might otherwise not see. Neil caught this bull moose taking a break, before he goes on to whatever it is moose do. Curious as to what the moose population in the U.P. is at, I came across some interesting information from the DNR about Michigan's Historic Moose Lift that took place twenty one years ago. There were no current statistics on the numbers inhabiting our forests though, so speak up if you can fill in the blanks for us.

I love the moose pics. I've been trying to photograph a moose for years in the wild, but no luck so far. Poor thing! I wonder how he manages to move that huge body around in snow that deep. I'm also curious as to any moose sitings others have had in the area of the Keweenaw.

Actually, there are quite a few moose in Keweenaw County. In fact, my son and I saw 19 in a 4 day hike covering 48.7 miles of the Keweenaw. I suppose I should mention we were on Isle Royale!

Several years ago, a friend out here in Jacobsville was able to
get a photo of this moose outside her house.

Love the pic of the moose...thanks Neil :) Seeing how deep the snow is on the moose, makes you appreciate their survival skills in the winter.
Davesou, if you look closely at the snow behind the moose, you can see where it has broken trail. Also, if you click on the link Mary provided for the air lift, there is a picture of a moose in similiar snowy conditions.

That moose looks like it is laying down. I admit I don't know alot about the habits of moose, but isn't that kind of strange?

I spent 2 weeks looking for a moose last year, never saw one. But I am not giving up, I am going back this year to try again!!

Were you walking the Greenstone Trail? (Your mileage sounds
about like that.) If you were, sounds like you made it a fast trip. I've
heard it is a good walk in a week. Wish I could do it some day, but
old age has caught up w/ me. Maybe my kids or grandkids. Last
time I went to the Royale (late 50's) , I twisted my ankle on a deck
hatch a 100 yards from the dock, and spent the next couple days
w/ my boot laced tightly, My dad said that if I took it off, I'd never
get it back on. Fun......NOT! Well, at least I can say that I've been
there.

Cool Photos! Been out to the Craig Lake area near Twin Lakes a few times looking for the elusive moose. There's a little bar along M-28 called Stumps Taven and the owner is a good one to talk with regarding the most recent moose sightings.
Came close last fall south of Sidnaw near Lake St Katheryn. Hoof prints and dropings on the trail. Would love to see one in the wild.

My father told me that he saw a moose standing in Gratiot Lake back in the late 1930's. I also have an moose antler hanging on my tool shed that was found, in the bush, by my uncle back in the early 1960's It is proof that moose were present in the Keweenaw for some time. They would come across on the ice from Isle Royale, when on the rare ocassion the big lake would freeze over.

A small correction on John's comment, Stumps is located in Three Lakes. I still have not seen a Moose around here,I always"just miss" seeing them, only seen one up around Big Bay.

The moose, with it's long legs shouldn't have a problem moving around in the snow there.
The wolves are more of a problem for the moose, especially for the little ones.

My son attends the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, and on our way home after visiting him one time, there it stood out in the field. Of course it was a moose. We were so excited. Did I have my camera? Of course not! Anyway, great shots. I love the one in Jacobsville.

Well, I know there is at least one moose in da Keweenaw. Took Aunt Tillie for spin. We had a moose walk in front of the card on Sedar Bay Road.

In the last few years I have spotted moose in Baraga County, near Mt. Arvon, and in Hougton County btwn Atlantic Mine and Superior Location. I think the Atlantic Mine spotting was a one-off, though. I think that guy was semi-famous, being spotted in Hancock, then crossing the canal, and finally strolling through Hougton. I thinks his picture was in the paper. It was around 2-3 days later, I stumbled across this moose, neck-deep in a wetlands pond, right along the direction he was last seen travelling. I visit that pond often and he has never returned.

I took the moose picture while on winter moose survey. It is a healthy moose. I don't know when the numbers wil be released. I am only the pilot but I know lot of statistical analysis goes into it. It takes time to complete.

I was driving home and saw a bull moose running down the side of the road right across the street from the Marquette Airport (KI Sawyer). My daughter then had to tell everyone that we saw a moose! This was just this past fall.

The only thing better than the U.P. from the air in my little Mooney is a cold one at (take your pick)........probably Dreamland Hotel.......

Technoido (James), my son and I took the Minong, and to do it in the time we did, was nothing short of grueling (at least for me). I remember at one point, with blisters on both feet (even with moleskin), I kept thinking of the Bataan Death March, and thought if they can do it, so can I!!! Next time we'll take more time. We did have fun! It was one of the first things I checked off on my list of things to do before I turn 50. I still have some things left to accomplish.---Cliffdweller
